WWE All Star Search #28 - Championship Wrestling (May 1986 part 2)

Hello Turnbucklers! Its edition #28 of our All Star Search and we're moving into the middle of March with two episodes of Championship Wrestling. You know the score, we probably won't have much to say about the matches but let's hope we get some good angle development. In the two episodes we have two relatively important matches. Kirchner vs Sheik is a continuation of the feud going on between the patriot and the evil foreigners and boy do I hope we're coming to the end of it. The Bulldogs vs the big lads is an interesting one because the Bulldogs have their title winning momentum while the big lads are on a downward spiral since Wrestlemania 2. Let's get on with it shall we?

The Show:

So let's kick off with the 10th May edition of Championship Wrestling. Our commentary team is Vince Mcmahon and Bruno Sammartino who run down the card.

Mike Angelo/Tiger Chung Lee vs Junkyard Dog/George Steele

The Haiti Kid is still with the faces and he's enjoying swinging his chain. Typical hijinks from Steele in this one until he gets caught in heel corner. Mike Angelo is freaking huge but a bite to the chest by Steele still manages to send him reeling. JYD comes in and hits a huge powerslam to Angelo in short order for the win. JYD is obviously stronger than he looks if he can slam Angelo like he did. After the match, there's an awkward stand off between Chung Lee and the faces while Angelo plays dead on the mat. It all comes to nothing and the faces celebrate! Not much to say about that one. Squash Rating: *

Its update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Jake Roberts! He asks whether Damien could be a tool used by evil worshippers? I think it's just a gimmick Al. We get a clip of a jobber getting snaked and that's all. No mention of the Steamboat angle once again.

Jimmy Jack Funk/Dory Funk vs Andre Malo/Dan King

Still no sign or mention of Terry Funk so I assume he's definitely left the WWF at this point. Bad timing though as the Funks could've been a good little faction. JJ shows plenty of aggression again but Dory just ups the game in terms of stiffness. Nice underhook suplex by Dory and the win comes with an awesome looking fallaway-powerslam move that I can't think I've seen before. Another case of not much to say except Jimmy Jack continues to impress me. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene who sends us to a Hulk Hogan promo. He rants on Macho Man and puts his hype down to Elizabeth. He puts Macho over quite well before claiming that he'll still win because this is America. Sigh.

The Killer Bees vs Iron Mike Sharpe/Joe Mirto

Always good to see Iron Mike! He always seems to have a sign with him claiming him to be Canada's Greatest Athlete. I can't help but imagine him making it by hand at home before the show! The Bee's are still coming out in their masks but inexplicably take them off for the match. Match is a typical Bee's affair with the head scissors making many an appearance. Bobby Heenan turns up on commentary who says he met with Jack Tunney. He's looking into what action the WWE is going to take over Andre the Giant and his no show from a few weeks previous. Heenan calls Andre a coward and says when he's done with it all, Andre will no longer be a part of WWE. By the way, the Bee's win with a poor looking powerslam on Mirto. Once again the Bee's are solid yet unspectacular and could really do with a featured storyline...that isn't with the Hart Foundation! Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined with Corporal Kirchner. They mention the Chernobyl explosion and somehow link it to the upcoming match between Kirchner and Nikolai Volkoff. Probably best not to mention a huge disaster that killed many a civilian...but hey, it happened to the enemy so why not.

Serge Jedoin vs Randy Savage (IC Champ)

Lots of stalling to start by Macho because...it's Macho in 1986. He really doesn't need to do his stalling schtick in these squash matches. Quite an audible Macho chant from a couple of lads in the crowd. Match finishes within a minute via an elbow drop from Macho and he's even nice enough to give another after the bell. Macho is another who needs a featured storyline after feuding with George Steele since forever. He still looks like a star after this one though. Squash Rating: *

Its time for the Flower Shop with Adrian Adonis and Jimmy Hart! He's joined by the Dream Team with Johnny V. They talk about their defeat at Wrestlemania 2 and blame it all on Ozzy Osbourne and two referees. They promise payback for the Bulldogs and that's all we have this week. If only Ozzy had actually done something of note at Wrestlemania and they'd have had a point.

Into the back with Lord Al who shows us clips of Saturday Night's Main Event whereby Jake Roberts absolutely destroyed Ricky Steamboat with his DDT on the concrete. Finally, it's nice to see it mentioned!

The Iron Sheik vs Corporal Kirchner

Well Christ, the pop for Kirchner is inexplicably loud. He even gets some patriotic signage from the crowd! I still can't him but he gets a massive USA chant up and running. He starts with a jumping headbutt and follows with a back body drop. Volkoff distracts from the outside and Sheik takes advantage. He hits a back body drop of his own before he locks on an abdominal stretch. Kirchner counters into a hip toss but misses the follow up elbow drop. Blassie gets involved and the ref does nothing but count before Sheik sends Kirchner flying outside. He scrambles back in the ring and manages a roll up on Sheik for 2. Sheik takes control again with a kick to the face as Vince admits Kirchner's wrestling ain't pretty to watch. Suplex attempt by Sheik is blocked and Kirchner hits a big one of his own. Kirchner picks up Sheik and levels him with a Samoan Drop! He makes the cover but Volkoff runs in for the DQ win for Kirchner. The heels give him boots until the Killer Bee's make the save. This will surely go down as a key moment in the Cold War but for now, it shall all continue. Crap match but the crowd enjoyed it. Match Rating: 1/4*

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by the heels we've just seen give it legs. Freddie Blassie rants on about Kirchner before Volkoff gives it more of the same. I love Volkoff, he's like an old, drunk, Russian grandpa. They leave and are replaced by Macho Man! He has a copy of the WWE Magazine with Hogan on the cover. He says he's going to win the WWE Championship at the upcoming house show. Boston is his town, ohhh yeah!

Onto the 17th May edition of Championship Wrestling and our commentators are once again Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino!

Ted Arcidi/King Tonga vs Dave Barbie/The Gladiator

It's matches like these that make me sad. There is literally no one in this match I'm interested in currently. The Gladiator has been appearing on this blog since the very beginning...so how come no one has yet found out anything about him...including his height and weight? That's just poor admin from the agents in the back. Really nice back suplex by Tonga seems to be the only highpoint in this one before Arcidi gets the win with a bearhug. Complete snorefest. Squash Rating: *

It's update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Steamboat and Jake Roberts. Essentially its a full recap of the brutal SNME attack from a few weeks ago. Apparently Steamer is 100% fit and raring for some revenge!

The Hart Foundation vs Lanny Poffo/Don Driggers

It's the blue and black attack, the Hart Foundation! Lanny has brought some frisbees with him and of course, has a poem. It's awful as expected and the heels have to oversell it. The Harts attack quickly and we get some decent back and forth between Bret and Lanny. It doesn't last long but the Harts look awesome in this with plenty of double team moves. A Hart Attack on Barbie gets the win and it's all elementary from there! I say this every time but the tag division needs some solid programs to match the solid athletes within it. Squash Rating: ***

Into the back with...some guy...who runs down an upcoming house show card. Hulk Hogan comes in wearing his bandana like an eyepatch. He moans about Savage and Liz and even says he doesn't trust Elizabeth. He has a suprise for Savage though...it's called Hulkamania. Crap suprise if you ask me though.

Pedro Morales/Hillbilly Jim vs Moondog Spot/Cyclone Capone

What? No Moondog Rex? Where's our refunds?! The faces come out to Jim's awful country music and I wonder how former WWF champion Pedro Morales feels about that. Hillbilly Jim does a lovely yet crap cartwheel before the match. That is in fact our highlight of the entire match. The win comes for the faces via a Jim Big Boot. Test, eat your heart out. Squash Rating: *

Vince wants to know if there are any non-profit organisations that want to fund raise via WWE. Interesting concept for sure!

Into the back with SOME GUY and he's joined by Corporal Kirchner. In a weird political moment, he compares his feud with Nikolai Volkoff and the recent (at the time) Chernobyl disaster (the second time in recent months WWE have mentioned it on air) but has to add in a claim about it being a huge Russian conspiracy. Promo is unfortunately poor but hey, it's Kirchner. Merica!

Hercules vs Mike Sexton

Mike Sexton is one of my favourite jobbers...but only because he always dresses like a disco ball. Ernie Ladd makes a quick appearance on commentary and says everybody wants to be a wrestler...I, however, disagree. While all this is going on, Herc is throwing punches like no ones business and even Blassie gets some cheeky shots in. Hercules is not at all smooth in the ring although he's still very aggressive. The win comes for Herc after the torture rack and it was all boring as sin. Squash Rating: *

It's time for the Flower Shop with Adonis and Jimmy Hart. Adonis comes in looking like a sunblushed tomato and its not long before the faggot chants start up...and then repeat. Their guest today is the MACHO MAN and Liz. Adonis appreciates Liz's make up before Randy cuts a promo telling people not to be jealous of him. Adonis goes to give Liz flowers, changes his mind, and gives them Savage instead. Cheeky! Bit of a nothing segment though.

Tito Santana/Dan Spivey vs Steve Lombardi/Paul Christy

Tito is dropping down the card quite quickly now. He's Spivey's latest tag team partner and surely someone has to gel with him, right? RIGHT? Wrong, match is unspectacular and crowd barely even wake up for Tito. Finish comes with a Spivey bulldog. Vince says we may see more of this team...and that sounds like a threat to me. Squash Rating: *

The British Bulldogs (Tag Team Champs) vs King Kong Bundy/Big John Studd

Straight into the main event now and to be fair, this is a biggie for Championship Wrestling. The Bulldogs get a big reception but no entrance. Big heat as per for the heels and one crowd sign alludes to Bundy's 'thigh burn'. Weirdly enough, this is a glorified squash by the heels after some initial Bulldog offense. Cool early spot see's a double dropkick take Studd down from the Bulldogs but from there, its all the heels...and its all slow and boring. Crowd are still really into it but a Studd shove to the referee gets the Bulldogs the DQ win. After the match, there's more dissention between the giant heels and I PRAY we never see a match between them! Match Rating: 1/2*

So as a summary, both shows were pretty sub par. The major focus seems to be on the upcoming house show match between Savage and Hogan which is all good on my part, if not maybe a little too soon for Savage when he has such good momentum. Steamboat and Roberts finally got some emphasis after their huge SNME angle and Roberts is really starting to look twisted, so twisted they're linking him to Satanism it seems. Shame about the very last match between the Bulldogs and the Heenan Family. It's looking like the big lads may be on course for a break up so why squash the tag teams? Perfect opportunity to have cemented the Bulldogs as THE team but low and behold, nada! Will try and finish off the rest of May in the next A.S.S but until then, have a good'n!

WWE All Star Search #27 - May 1986 (Part 1)

Hello Turnbucklers! Its edition number 27 and we have a TV show and a house show to bring you! The Championship Wrestling taping has what you'd expect but with the added bonus of a stacked main event. We get two in ring debut on the house show as well one of which is somewhat notable. So will Jake Roberts continue to be a cunt? Will Ricky Steamboat break his face and recover within the day? Will Bundy and Studd continue to plummit into irrelevance? Let's find out!

We kick off this edition with Championship Wrestling from the 3rd of May. Our commentators tonight are Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino.

The Dream Team vs Don Driggers/Tony Garea

It's the former tag champs and the crowd still definitely gives it to them. Brutus seems to be a bit more hyped up in this one but a crap looking elbow reminds me that Beefcake is still below average. Garea takes the brunt of the offense but escapes a double team move and gets a roll up for 2. Once Driggers comes in, he eats a nice suplex from Beefcake and a really nice butterfly underhook throw from Valentine. Beefcake back in to hit a big powerslam and Valentine finishes it off with the figure 4. The heels give it boots afterwards but nothing special overall. Squash Rating: **

Update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Wrestlemania 2 again. This time he get to see the ending to the Funks/JYD-Tito match. Lord Al tells us Terry suffered a bad knee injury in that match.

Al Navarro vs Ricky Steamboat

So last time we saw Steamboat he was KO'd thanks to a Jake Roberts DDT on the concrete. Vince told us he'd be back in a week...but this was shown 2 DAYS after SNME. That is how you kill what could've been a seriously good angle. Imagine how dangerous the DDT could've seemed if Steamboat was out of action for weeks. Steamboat lets Navarro get some offense in but in the end Steamboat gets the win with the flying body press. Not one hint of the SNME angle in this one. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by Nikolai Volkoff and Iron Sheik. Nikolai tells Gene Mean that they never lost the belts and proceeds to cut a horrific promo. Sheik saves it by just being his normal unorthodox self. Has anyone ever noticed that Iron Sheik is a Middle Eastern version of Mean Gene?

Scott McGhee/John Centeno vs Iron Sheik/Nikolai Volkoff

We have a new miscellaneous jobber! John Centeno looks a lot like Al Navarro but with a sprinkling of Latino about him. The heels get MASSIVE heat as per. Seriously, no one ever gets the heat that Volkoff and Sheik do. That is why the Cold War was the best character developer the WWE could have in 1986. Blassie gets on the mic and claims he wants Corporal Kirchner to sign a contract to face Iron Sheik next week! I can not wait for that one. There's a massive USA chant to support the Scot and the Puerto Rican ... but it's all in vain and Sheik wins via the Camel Clutch. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's with Ricky Steamboat. He talks about beating Muraco and Fuji and how he's looking to the future. Despite no mention of SNME, he does mention Jake calling him out. He puts over Roberts, the DDT and the snake all in one amazing babyface promo.

Paul Christie/Cyclone Capone vs The British Bulldogs (Tag Team Champs)

Massive pop for the Bulldogs and it'll be interesting to see how much the Dynamite Kid will be in this one. I got to point out as well...new jobber! Davey takes control in the early goings before tagging in Dynamite. Dynamite pulls off an amazing suplex followed by another. He hits a big powerslam and tags in Davey who hits an awesome suplex himself. Dynamite tags in for another hard suplex, back suplex, followed by another side suplex. Seriously, this is awesome. They eventually get the win with a top rope powerslam. That was the best squash match I've seen so far, the crowd loved it too! That is exactly how to use a TV squash match to your advantage! Squash Rating: *****

Its the Flower Shop with Adrian Adonis! This is the replacement for Pipers Pit and I already love the Carly Simon theme. Adonis revels in the flowers on his set while the crowd chant faggot. Hillbilly Jim is his guest and Jim is very proud to be a hillbilly apparently. Adonis asks where Elmer is before asking Jim if he wants Adonis. Jim says Uncle Elmer is hurt before getting mad at Adonis and that's it. Hopefully that means that...Uncle Elmer is gone!

Nelson Villieux vs Jake Roberts

Jake's crowd reactions are slowly but surely growing but it may be for the snake. Nelson gets himself tied in the ropes which is never a smart move when Jake's around. Jake works over Nelson methodically before finishing him off with the DDT. Again, no mention of SNME and very little mention of Ricky Steamboat. This is 2 days after that huge angle. Squash Rating: **

Tito Santana/Paul Orndorff vs Randy Savage (IC Champ)/Bob Orton

Holy shit, where did this match come from! Suprisingly stacked for a TV match, I'm hoping for something decent here. Orton and Orndorff start us off and the crowd pops huge when Orndorff levels Orton with a scoop slam. Macho and Tito tag in respectively but Macho wants none of Tito so bails to the outside. He comes back in the ring and tags in Orton. They lock up and the faces do some quick tag maneuvers as the crowd chants for Tito. Orton manages to lock on a headscissors but Orndorff counters into a roll up for 2. Tito tags in and levels Macho on the apron but Orton takes advantage. He hits a nice backbreaker on Tito and now Macho tags in. He hits a big clothesline for 2 and tags Orton back in. Orton gets another 2 off a clothesline and continues to work over Tito. Tito whips Orton into the corner and makes the hot tag to Orndorff who cleans house. He hits a big dropkick on Orton, levels Macho and hits a big atomic drop on Orton. Macho distracts him allowing Orton to pearl harbour him but Tito involves himself for the save. Tito and Macho both tag in and in the schmoz, Tito hits a big flying forearm to Macho for the big 3 count! The crowd go crazy but the heels attack after the bell. A nice, fun little match with a surprising clean win for Tito. Match Rating: *3/4

Into the back with Mean Gene in a silly hat and he's joined by Bobby Heenan, Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy. Heenan gets so flustered about Gene's hat that he has to wander off. Studd makes Gene laugh about something and that's about as interesting as this promo was. 

Onwards to the Maple Leaf show...

This show happens on the 4th May, so one day after the previous TV episode. Our commentary team are

Tiger Chung Lee vs Don Kolov

My joy is short lived as what the fuck is this opener?! Tiger Chung Lee hasn't been relevant since...ever and who the hell is Don Kolov. Apparently he's from Bulgaria but that's all Monsoon will let us know. Kolov locks on a hammerlock but Lee fights out of it into a leg lock of his own. Kolov sells the leg when he gets up and the two fall back into a hammerlock. Lee starts to take over with slowest pace possible and uses basic strikes to keep control. Lee misses a charge into the corner allowing Kolov to get a dropkick in which sends Lee to the outside. Back in the ring they lock up numerous times before Lee takes control again with big stomps and punches which gets him a 2 count. He gets another 2 count with a knee to the head and this continues to suck. Kolov tries to fight back but inexplicably stalls, allowing Lee to continue to batter him. Lee picks him up and nails a big tombstone piledriver for the win. Christ that was so boring I cannot fathom. Interesting to see Lee using the tombstone but that's as far as my interest goes. Match Rating: DUD

Johnny K9 vs Scott McGhee

More jobbers?! What did the Canadian fans do to deserve these two openers. Scott McGhee has put on some decent matches against bigger talent but Johnny K9 we've just seen being jobbed out. They lock up to start and McGhee starts off in control but can't take advantage. They lock up again and McGhee locks on an armbar but K9 uses his hair to fight out of it. The crowd start booing as the pace continues to meander and the armbars keep coming. K9 finally takes control and shows some decent aggression, enough to get some gasps out the crowd. Granted he does nothing more than a kitchen sink but still, aggression is shown. He hits a diving headbutt for 2 but McGhee fights back with right hands. McGhee slams K9's head into the mat for 2 and follows with a snap suplex for another 2. K9 fights back but the two botch an irish whip. McGhee takes control and gets another 2 off a stomp. He continues to work over K9 in the corner and follows with a german suplex, bridges into the pin and that gets the win. Slightly better than the opener but the crowd, nor myself really cared. Match Rating: 1/4*

Bret Hart vs Jim Brunzell

Strange how this isn't a tag match but none the less, it's a Bret match so I can expect some quality. The crowd have definitely woken up for this one and the Harts get some decent heat. They stall to start with Bret complaining that Brunzell has too much tape on his elbow but I can't imagine why that would be an issue. They eventually lock up and Bret takes control with headbutts, strikes and a cheeky kick to the midriff. Brunzell gets sent outside while Bret taunts the crowd and Heenan mirks him off on commentary. Bret follows outside and attacks on the raised rampway before taunting the crowd some more. Brunzell attacks from the outside and wraps Bret's leg around the ringpost. He goes after Jimmy Hart before going to work on Bret's leg in the ring. Bret sells the leg when he gets up but Brunzell won't stop the assault, eventually locking on a leglock. Brunzell tries for the figure 4 but Bret fights out of it...still selling the leg...and goes to work on Brunzell with knee drops. Bret hits his awesome backbreaker for 2 and follows that with an atomic drop. He locks on a headlock as the crowd rallies behind Brunzell. He tries to fight out repeatedly but Bret just won't let go. He eventually gets Bret in the corner but misses a charge and eats a second rope elbow drop from Bret for 2. Brunzell manages to get a sunset flip out of nowhere for 2 followed by a flying forearm to knock both men out. He hits a leg drop on Bret and the crowd are alive now. Bret whipped into the corner and Brunzell works away on him. Nice dropkick by Brunzell gets 2 but Bret rakes the eyes and drops Brunzell crotch first on the top rope for a DQ! What a crap ending! If that had 2 more minutes of fast back and forth, could've potentially have been a good *** match. Since when was crotching on the top rope a DQ? Match Rating: *3/4

Jim Neidhart vs B Brian Blair

Jimmy Hart has stayed at ringside for this one and I guess that answers my question on why the previous match wasn't a tag match. I'm expecting this to be shorter and slower in pace seeing as Anvil is involved. There's the standard stalling to start with Neidhart showing off his strength but Blair eventually surprises him with a flying forearm that sends Anvil to the outside to regroup. Back in the ring Blair locks on an armbar and takes things into the corner. Anvil uses his strength to counter and takes control. He misses a charge in the corner and Blair takes his chance to work over Anvil's arm. Jimmy Hart manages to distract Blair and Anvil takes control by doing the old pearl harbour trick and a cheeky choke in the corner. He hits a big running tackle into the corner and gets major heat afterwards before locking on a chinlock and moving that into a headlock. That headlock lasts for quite a few minutes before Anvil inexplicably lets go. Blair eventually fights back and hits a big atomic drop followed by a clothesline. He rakes Anvil's eyes on the top rope befoe hitting a scoop slam and elbow drop. He misses another elbow and Anvil can take back control in the corner with another cheeky choke. He goes for another runnign tackle in the corner but Blair reverses it into a roll up for the 3 count! Bret runs down afterwards followed by Jim Brunzell and the teams have a big ol' brawl which the Harts seemingly get the best of. Match was nothing special but I like Anvil, he's just natural entertaining. It would've made more sense to me to have one member of each team get a win tonight but no, it's the Bee's who walk away looking the stronger. Match Rating: *1/2

Tito Santana vs Randy Savage (IC Champ) [No DQ IC Title Match]

Really noticeable boo's for Tito when he comes out and Macho Man gets a decent pop. We're always guaranteed a solid match between these two and maybe the added stipulation of no DQ will make it even better. I'm still waiting for Macho to move onto his next feud and this seems like a step back in progression for me. Savage's mannerisms are just so subtle they're golden. After a hefty amount of cowardly stalling from Savage, he uses Liz to distract Tito long enough to pearl harbour him and take control. He heads up top quickly but thats never smart as Tito catches him on the way down. Savage tries to bail out the ring but it's all in vain as Tito keeps him rooted with punches. Both men head outside while Tito uses ringside padded chairs to batter Savage. He throws Macho over the guardrail and by guardrail, I mean old 80's metal guardrail that would maim. Back in the ring, Tito comes off the top rope with a chop before peppering Macho with stomps. Big Tito chant breaks out which makes his initial reaction even more baffling. Macho manages to regain control with a cheap shot that sends Tito back outside the ring. Back in the ring, Tito fights back but misses a charge in the corner as Heenan says it 'siesta time.' Macho heads up top and comes off with a strong ax handle before choking Tito on the top rope. Tito tries to fight back but Macho stays on him with punches and knees but he only manages a 2 count. Shoulderblock by Macho gets him another 2 and the crowd have been alive all the way through this. Big scoop slam by Macho but he misses the following knee drop. Macho with a big kick to the back but Tito counters a scoop slam into a roll up for 2. He tries to keep up the momentum but Macho levels him with a right hand for 2. Tito is sent outside the ring and Macho climbs to the top rope and jumps to the outside hitting Tito with another ax handle. Macho heads off to find a chair but misses Tito and hits the ringpost instead. Tito can't take advantage and gets thrown back into the crowd while the guardrail breaks around them. Another ax handle from the top rope fails and all Macho hits is steel chair and Tito finally fights back with punches. He rams Macho's head into the announcers table before they head onto the raised rampway. Tito is still in control, bashing Macho's head into the ramp but Macho fights back with an eyerake. Tito rams Macho's head again and sends him back into the ring. The crowd go crazy as he goes for the figure 4 but Macho counters. They head back outside and Tito won't stop unloading punches until Macho rams his head into the table. A shit load of police appear to hold back the guardrail which looks odd and we see Macho has now been busted open! Both men make it back into the ring and start trading punches which Macho wins with a cheap eye rake. Macho manages to shove the ref is his haste but Tito hits the flying forearm. There's no one to count and Tito counts to 3 himself but it all means nothing. He goes to revive the ref and levels Macho but there's still no one to make this count. He tries to revive the ref again but Macho successfully cheap shots him this time. They trade roll ups and the ref is up just in time to count Tito down and give Macho the win! The crowd are going insane by the time this finishes and I don't blame them. That was a good, good match and these two continue to work together better than any other pair in the company. Macho definitely brings out the best in Tito! Match Rating: ***1/4

Dory Funk/Jimmy Jack Funk vs George Wells/Lanny Poffo

This is Jimmy Jack's real blog debut I guess considering his disastrous previous appearance in the last edition. Wells and JJ start us off with Wells coming out the better with a sunset flip for 2. Everyone ends up in the ring and the faces clean house sending the Funks reeling outside. Dory and Lanny both tag in but again the faces come out on top. Lanny locks on a facelock but gets suplexed for his troubles. JJ tags in and hits a big slam and works away on Lanny with kicks to the face. Wells tags back in and locks in a headlock before we get the standard Funk criss-cross spot. It just wasn't the same without Terry though! Dory takes control and works away on Wells with strong punches before locking in an armbar. Interestingly, Terry is still being mentioned on commentary so I'm guessing he's still a part of the company. JJ tags in and continues the assault on Wells as Jimmy Hart gets on commentary to briefly annoy Monsoon. In comes Dory and then straight back out via a quick double team tackle from the Funks. JJ hits some awful punches but Wells starts to fight back before tagging in Poffo. Poffo rallies away with punches and same again for Dory when he tags in. Poffo hits a dropkick before locking in a headlock but Dory fights out in the corner and lays in some more of his hard punches. Shoulderblock by Dory but Poffo reverses the next into one of his own followed by a slam and a dropkick. JJ tries to get involved but ends up hitting Dory, sending both heels outside to regroup. Back in the ring, Dory hits a nice suplex out the ring onto the ramp on Poffo and the thud sounded hard. A big brawl breaks out between everyone on the outside that leaves Poffo laying once again. Back in the ring, Dory locks on an abdominal stretch as Heenan claims he'd aim for the neck himself. Poffo fights out briefly but JJ tags in and sends him back down with a clothesline and a headbutt for 2. JJ rams Poffo into the corner before tagging in Dory but a double KO spot ensues to indifference from the crowd. Finally Poffo gets the hot tag to Wells who nails a big clothesline on JJ and a big dropkick. Big uppercuts by Wells but JJ follows with a scoop slam. JJ goes up top but Wells catches him on the way down for a big slam. He misses a charge in the corner allowing JJ to hit a nice powerslam for the 3 count. A solid match for what is was worth and a decent introduction to Jimmy Jack. He was solid in this one except for his weak punches and Dory was solidly technical as always. Wells looked good in this one as well, much like he did at Wrestlemania 2. Terry who? Match Rating: *1/2

SD Jones vs Harley Race

It's a blog debut for the former NWA Heavyweight champion, Harley Race. He hasn't been seen in WWF for 6 years but he's back now albeit looking slightly older. The commentators hype him up but don't mention his accolades. They lock up and Jones gets the early advantage with hip tosses and a headlock as the crowd are already chanting boring! Race takes control with a high knee but I miss the next move because the cameraman gets distracted. Race hits a nice piledriver but SD kicks out at 1?! Race continues to work over Jones methodically but still only gets 2 counts at most. Race hits an awkward looking neckbreaker for 1 while the crowd still chant boring. Even a nice gutwrench suplex doesn't ease them nor does a lovely standard suplex for 2. Another 1 count from an elbow drop but SD fights back briefly. Race keeps control in the corner and then takes down SD with a snapmare. He hits a diving headbutt off the top rope but that only gets 2. SD fights back with headbutts of his own but Race kills the momentum with a headbutt to the willy before hitting a big powerslam for the win! Race looked really good in this, showing off some decent power moves but I'm worried over how long his stamina may last. This was essentially an slightly extended TV squash match. He does look knackered after that. Match Rating: *1/4

Dan Spivey vs Adrian Adonis

It seems like a while since we've seen Spivey and I've been fairly disappointed by Adonis' more recent matches. Why is it that whenever a 'faggot' chant breaks out, it always sounds like its a little girl chanting? It's unsettling! Things head outside pretty quickly with Spivey hitting a strong scoop slam on the concrete. Back in the ring he hits another scoop slam and locks on a headlock. I can't help but notice that Jimmy Hart is always acting camper when he's managing Adonis. That's a good heel manager! Adonis fights back but they botch a leap frog before Spivey hits another scoop slam and locks on another headlock. There's a really weird spot as Spivey goes for a chop block but Adonis just walked out of the way. It looked very...real. Anyway, Adonis is back in control after that and throws Spivey to the outside. He follows outside and goes for a piledriver on the ramp but Spivey counters into a back body drop. He misses an elbow and things head back into the ring. Adonis tries to go for an underhook something but Spivey counters. They trade blows and Spivey hits a sloppy backbreaker but that only gets 2. Spivey whips Adonis into the corner and follows with a back body drop. He misses another charge in the corner and Adonis goes up top. Wrestling 101 says that won't work but he reverses the counter from Spivey into a roll up and Adonis gets the cheeky 3. Crap match that tells me that Spivey is as plain as plain can be and that Adonis is definitely going through a lethargic phase. Match Rating: 1/2*

King Kong Bundy/Big John Studd vs Junkyard Dog/Hulk Hogan (WWE Champ)

The crowd go MENTAL when Hogan and JYD come out and Hogan even has time to play with a fans Hulkster doll and JYD has the word 'thump' on his arse. As we know, since Wrestlemania, Bundy has been in a steady decline and Studd still sucks. Studd and JYD start us off and JYD gets the immediate control with headbutts and right hands. His downfall comes when he tries to slam Studd but can't...so Studd slams him in return. JYD tags in Hogan to major noise and they lock up. Studd gets the early control but Hogan fights back. Studd again gets the upperhand when Hogan can't slam him and so he slams Hogan in return. He hits another slam but misses an elbow. Hogan uses this to slam both Studd and Bundy in a real impressive spot. The crowd go crazy as the heels regroup (and argue) on the outside. Back in the ring they lock up again and Hogan continues to unload on Studd. JYD tags in and headbutts Studd before he tags in Bundy. JYD continues his assault on Bundy before he tags in Hogan. He hits a big clothesline on Bundy but that only gets a 2 before Bundy starts to fight back. Bundy works over Hogan in the corner before tagging Studd back in. Studd locks on a bearhug, which to me is one of the worst wrestling holds. Bundy tags back in and he hits an awkward elbow on Hogan. He hits a scoop slam on Hogan and hits a splash fora 2. He goes for another splash but Hogan moves and tags in JYD. He works over Bundy with headbutts but misses one allowing Studd to tag back in and work over JYD. A massive JYD chant breaks out but he gets double teamed by the heels but they only get a 2. Bundy locks on a headlock and eventually tags out to Studd. He comes in...and does very little...until JYD hits a headbutt and tags in Hogan. Hogan rallies away with punches, hits a clothesline and an atomic drop. He hits a leg drop on Studd but Heenan breaks up the pin for the DQ win for the faces. After the bell, the heels try to attack but Hogan makes sure Heenan gets squished in the corner instead of JYD before the heels run off. I just wish the big lads were better than they actually are. Studd especially is difficult to watch because he does so little. The heels seem to be arguing between them recently so I expect them to split apart soon. JYD was super over in this and if he wasn't tagging with Hogan it'd seem way more impressive. Overall though the match was a bit of a stinker apart from Hogan slamming both big lads. Match Rating: 3/4*

So all in all, we can call these two shows average. At some point, the Bees and the Harts will have to fight someone else but at least until then, we can expect decent things from them. Tito and Savage again had the best match by far and I don't know what it is about those two but they just gel so well. I certainly find myself liking Tito more when he fights Savage which proves just how good Savage is. The main event was entertaining but let's face it, we were never expecting a classic. OK debuts for Harley Race and Jimmy Jack Funk (the latter definitely surprising me). So let's head to the ol' scoreboard!

WWE All Star Search #20 - 8th March 1986

Well hello there Turnbucklers! It's edition #20 and it's a house show! This time we're coming from Boston and looking at the card, it's very much a mixed bag. So...we have one big debut on the blog and he's a favourite of many. We also have not one, but TWO women's tag matches featuring women from Japan. We have Bret Hart vs Ricky Steamboat which is a match that on paper makes my mouth water with excitement. We have another match between Macho and Tito for the IC belt and also the well hyped tag match main event. So...will Jake play with his sack? Is Dump the best first name out there and will Bret vs Dragon be lightyears ahead of everything else on the card? Let's find out...

The Show:

Rene Goulet vs Sivi Afi

So we're straight into our first match and commentators are Lord Alfred Hayes and Gorilla Monsoon. Monsoon says Jesse Ventura is on special assignment but doesn't know any more than that. Nice to see Rene Goulet back on our blog, I wonder if he found his missing glove yet? Monsoon calls him the Michael Jackson of the wrestling world but I think I disagree. Lots of stalling to start by Goulet but what else would you expect. Take down by Afi but he doesn't follow up. Goulet locks on an armbar but Afi escapes. Cute spot where Afi escapes the corner 10 punch and follows up with a headlock. They have an awkward counter sequence but once again, it ends in a headlock for Afi and it lasts forever, give or take Goulet attempting to escape but failing. The crowd needless to say are dead at this point. Goulet eventually escapes using his knee and works over the neck of Afi. Goulet hits a clothesline and gets a 2 count before putting on his dreaded face claw. Is there anything painful about a face claw? Apparently so as Afi almost gets counted out but shockingly fights back at 3. He misses a charge however and eats a chop from the top rope for 1. Again Goulet goes back to the claw hold but Afi fights back with a scoop slam and an awkward dropkick. End this match please. Afi no sells Goulet's offense, despite them both being foreign. Afi rams Goulets head repeatedly into the turnbuckle, nails a slam and a big back body drop. He hits a headbutt but that only gets a 2 count followed by a cross body that also gets a 2. He goes up top, hits a flying cross body and that's what gets the 3. The cross body itself was really poor. Last time we saw Afi, he was getting booed and I can't imagine this sloppy and boring match will help the cause. Match Rating: 1/4*

Jose Luis Rivera vs Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

Holy shit! It's a blog debut for Jake the Snake! He looks so young and clean! He's got his bag ominously sitting in the corner. Jake psychs out Rivera to start all while stalling and flashes an evil smile. Rivera nails a punch and Jake stalls again to regroup. Jake goes for a scoop slam, misses but hits a boot to the stomach followed by a nice gutbuster. Jake slaps him about on the mat before picking up to send him back down with a punch and he follows with a headlock. Rivera fights out, hits a shoulderblock but Jake counters the next with a chop block before going back to the headlock all the while flashing that cheeky smile. Rivera fights out again but Jake responds with a scoop slam. He misses the following elbows and Rivera works over his arm. Jake reaches for his sack (ahem) but Rivera holds him back via the arm. Cross body by Rivera but Jake slithers away to the ropes. Another lock up and Rivera goes back to the arm but Jake hits a clothesline with his damaged arm...and he sells it after! Scoop slam by Jake followed by a massive knee lift to the face and a sleeper hold which eventually draws boring chants due to its longevity. Rivera escapes with a snapmare followed by a clothesline which sends Jake reeling. Big back body drop by Rivera as Jake slithers away again. Jake cheap shots Rivera to regain the advantage before hitting the DDT! Which Lord Al calls a brainbuster and Gorilla calls the 'GDT'. That of course gets the win for Jake and he celebrates by getting his sack from the corner but he doesn't get the snake out, he just leaves after the ref tells him too! I guess it is his first day after all. So a decent debut for Jake. His psychology was great from selling the arm all the way to his slithering out the ring. He has the definition of ring presence about him. Rivera did his bit and kept the pace quick in some parts although there were times where the match just died due to rest holds. No one does a DDT better than Jake...no one! Match Rating: *

Chigusa Nagayo/Lioness Asuka vs Judy Martin/Donna Christianello

First of all, neither Gorilla or Lord Al have a clue which Japanese girl is which so that going to be fun. Secondly both Japanese girls are terrifying to look at. Thirdly, I've heard good things about Japanese women's wrestling at this time so I'm hoping they're good although I'm not expecting anything good from their American counterparts. Gorilla asks the ref who Lioness is...and the ref asks Chigusa who tells him, who tells Gorilla. The Japanese girls didn't look to happy about all that...awkward! Judy Martin slaps away a handshake attempt before dipping her toes into the stalling pool where she has a meltdown to the silent crowd. They lock up finally before Donna comes in but Chigusa takes and keeps control with some athletic armbars. Martin back in for more stalling to big crowd heat. In comes the Lioness who misses a cool looking high kick and eats a middle kick from Martin. Lioness with kicks of her own and Martin flees to the outside for more stalling and the crowd are getting restless. Martin takes control with kicks and punches but misses a charge and ends up in a sunset flip for 1. In comes Donna who locks on a facelock and hits a snapmare. Chigusa tags in but is taken down by Donna who works on the legs before tagging in Judy Martin. Chigusa goes for a cross body but gets caught however the Lioness is there to dropkick them over. The heels again regroup on the outside before Christianello comes in and tries to reason with the Japanese girls but it was shockingly all a ruse as the heels take control with double team maneuvers. Lioness fights back with martial arts and a Ricky Steamboat style chop but Chigusa falls to the heels once she tags in. Awkward double team backbreaker by the heels in the corner before the heels continue to use heelish tactics while the ref is distracted. Chigusa counters into a boston crab but Martin breaks it up with a choke but no DQ despite clearly using rope. The heels continue working over Chigusa who can't seem to make a tag. Martin back in who continues to hold Chigusa back while taunting Lioness. Good lord Judy Martin has too many rolls for that leotard. Lioness finally gets the hot tag to good cheers and cleans house with a dropkick and a scoop slam. Chigusa goes up top as Lioness hits another scoop slam and comes off with an elbow drop. The ref ignores an illegal tag as Chigusa locks in a modified sharpshooter but Martin gets to the ropes. That's the first sharpshooter of the blog. Lioness comes off the top with a clothesline but misses as Martin takes control again. Neckbreaker by Lioness regains control before the faces double team Martin. Both girls drop elbows on Martin but again she fights back. The faces hit a double dropkick before Lioness hits a big swing and that gets the 3! Match was on and off for me with the Americans really letting themselves down. It's hard to ignore the gap in work rate and quality between the two teams. The fact we saw a sharpshooter was a nice highlight in a suprisingly decent match. Match Rating: *3/4

Scott McGhee vs Jim Neidhart

Jimmy Hart is with the Anvil as you'd expect and he gets big heat when announced. Neidhart uses his power to his advantage to start but McGhee almost catches him out with a speedy school boy. Test of strength spot leads to Neidhart inevitably taking control with a cheap shot. McGhee surprises him again with a sunset flip attempt but it barely gets a 1. McGhee charges but Anvil sends him flying outside as Jimmy Hart gets on commentary briefly to say that the Harts aren't getting a deserved title shot. Neidhart drops McGhee on the guardrail before hitting a scoop slam in the ring. Neidhart uses the hair as the ref does nothing before he tries and fails to hit a suplex. McGhee hits one of his own and rallies back with punches, trying to get the crowd behind him. He misses a charge and Neidhart hits a powerslam and that gets the quick win. Simple and nothing special from anyone, although Jimmy Hart makes a good point about a title shot. Match Rating: 3/4*

Bret Hart vs Ricky Steamboat

Good lord, on paper this should be amazing. Bret is still quite green here but Steamboat has been solid for the past year at least. My fear is I'm expecting a little too much from these two due to the crap we've seen so far on this card. Jimmy Hart is still ringside with Bret Hart. Quick start from Bret who pearl harbours Steamboat and rallies away with punches in the corner. Steamboat whips Bret into the turnbuckle and that gives him the chance to take his robe off. He points at Bret before hitting chops and punches as the crowd love it. Snapmare by Steamboat before he tries to chase off Jimmy Hart. Steamboat locks in an armbar before going to work on said arm. Crowd chant for the Dragon who continues to work on the arm which is sold by Bret. Wristlock by Dragon before he rams Brets arm into the turnbuckle. Steamboat still doesn't let go until Bret escapes but Steamboat uses his speed to avoid Bret by sliding through his legs...twice...before hitting an armdrag. It's not long before Bret is back in an armbar but he escapes and takes control briefly. Another speedy exchange between the two but Bret has stopped selling the arm. Leapfrogs by Dragon before he botches a back flip, hits an armdrag and goes back to the armbar. Jimmy Hart comes back to commentary to lambast Steamboat for using illegal maneuvers such as using the tights. Steamboat is still working over Bret's left arm but Bret eventually fights out of it again. He tries for a back suplex but it fails and Steamboat hits a nice thrust kick to the face. He runs the ropes but Bret is there to counter into a swinging neckbreaker to take control. He hits a legdrop but isn't selling the arm which is frustrating. He hits some punches and goes low before Steamboat is sent through the ropes to the outside. Sell your arm Bret, please! More punches by Bret as Steamboat hangs off the apron. Bret suplexes him back into the ring but that only gets a 2 count. The crowd start making some noise with Steamboat chants and Bret locks on a headlock. Steamboat fights back and the two trade punches. Bodyslam by Bret gets 2 but he misses a backbreaker and eats a slam by Steamboat. Steamboat goes for a splash but Bret gets his knees up! Steamboat gets thrown to the outside and Bret follows to hit a scoop slam on the wooden Boston Garden floor. Bret taunts the crowd inside the ring to decent heat and hits a nice powerslam for a close 2 count. Bret starts to get wound up and rallies away with punches before hitting his crisp backbreaker. No cover as he goes for his second rope elbow drop but that misses! Crowd loves it as Steamboat starts to fight back using his standard strikes before crawling over for a 2 count. Steamboat is selling the fatigue like a boss before he hits a suplex and that gets another close 2 count! More punches gets another 2 count before he goes to the corner to hit some more chops. Bret reverses an irish whip to KO the ref which means there's no one to count when he manages to hit clothesline. Bret hits a crossbody but Steamboat rolls through into his own pin attempt and that gets the 3 and the crowd love it! Great match, let's face it, head and shoulders above what we've seen so far on this card. The action was fast and the counters were smooth making this match seem like it far shorter than it actually was. Steamboat sold like a boss and made Bret look great but it was frustrating no end to see Bret not selling his left arm after all the work Steamboat put in, focussing on it throughout the entire early goings. The last 5 minutes of this match were fantastic and the end (despite the pointless ref bump) was great. I wouldn't blame anyone going upto 4*'s for this but Bret's no selling brings it down slightly lower for me. Match Rating: ***1/2

Tito Santana vs Randy Savage (IC Champ) [IC Title Match]

Another match to add to list between these two this year as their feud continues. Savage won the belt last month using a weapon which he later denied and Tito has sworn ever since to right those wrongs. The reaction Savage and Liz get when they come out absolutely eclipses Tito's which to me proves that giving Savage the belt was the correct decision. Liz of course looks lovely and is sporting a cheeky fringe tonight. Tito tries to get to Savage before he can get in the ring but Savage avoids it and still finds time to parade around the ring with his belt. Savage and Gorilla have words while Savage tries to stall getting in the ring but the crowd still ain't booing. After a long, long time, he does get into the ring but he runs away from Tito straight back outside repeatedly while the commentators seem surprised at his speediness. Tito eventually gets bored and goes on the chase. He eventually catches him and throws him into the crowd before they make it back into the ring and Tito takes control with kicks and punches. He hits an atomic drop as the crowd roar their approval before the two make their way back outside. Tito comes off the apron with an elbow before they head back inside while a Tito chant breaks out. The ref makes Tito ease up but Savage takes advantage and throws Tito back outside onto the unpadded wooden floor. Savage heads outside and nails Tito in the back before getting back inside. Savage drags Tito back inside and drags his face across the top rope. Savage goes up top and hits an ax handle but that only gets a 2 count. Savage with a brutal knee to the face and that also gets a 2 count. Savage works the ribs before hitting a nice clothesline and again it only gets a 2 count. Savage rams Tito into the corner, goes for the 10 punches but Tito reverses it into an atomic drop. Tito continues to fight back with punches as Savage begs for respite, albeit unsuccessfully. Tito hits a flyign forearm for 2 and then a dropkick for 2. He goes for the figure 4 but Savage escapes outside. Savage goes to his tights like last month but Tito is right behind to nail him off the apron. Back in the ring Savage tries to escape but Tito keeps dragging him back while the ref tries to stop him. Eventually Tito gets hotheaded and pushes the ref and that causes him to be DQ'd as Savage makes a quick escape. Interesting finish that made Tito look a bit like a fool, I mean, it was a title match afterall. Savage wasn't anything special in this one to be fair and I preferred their previous matches but let's face it, this was still a good outing for both. Time to move on feudwise but I wouldn't be surprised if we see this match again in the near future. Match Rating: **3/4

Velvet McIntyre/Dawn Marie vs Bull Nakano/Dump Masamoto

Two women's tag matches on one card and both have featured Japanese talent. If anyone can tell me if there's a specific reason why these Japanese women have been brought in, please let me know. One has a bright yellow mohican style ponytail dealio going on while the other is dressed head to toe in Japanese warrior garb. I have to point out, Dump is the worst name ever. Dawn Marie isn't Al Wilson's widow and Velvet isn't Mother Drew but both are expected to be as bad as Judy Martin and Donna Christianello. The Japanese women are accompanied by some bloke wearing an All Japan Women's Pro Wrestling jacket and the commentators notice just how ugly Nakano is. Dump and Velvet start us off but Dump stalls by screaming but I don't know why. The Japanese girls seem to be heels in this match as Velvet works over Dumps arm. Dawn Marie tags in and continues to work over the arm but Dump counters and tags in Nakano. She continues screaming and uses her strength to keep control. She no sells Marie's punches and Velvet tags in. Velvet misses the worst dropkick attempt I've ever seen and eats a hairmare for her trouble. Nakano with a shoulderblock before pulling Velvet's hair and tagging in Dump. I need to tag in Dump myself after this blog. She continues to work over Velvet using no actual technical moves at all until Velvet hits a cross body for 2. Nakano continues the offensive as Dawn Marie tags in. Dump back in as well as she stands on the throat of Marie before hitting a scoop slam and a splash for 2. She locks on a sleeper hold to put the crowd into rigor mortis danger as the few still alive start to chant boring. Velvet gets the warm tag and nails the second worst dropkick I've ever seen. She hits an equally poor shoulderblock but runs into the stomach of Nakano and gets flattened for 2. Velvet botches a sunset flip but the retry gets the 3 count! I'm just thankful that it's over. Between the screaming of the Japanese women, the botches of McIntyre or the no selling of Dawn Marie, this one was painful to watch by the end. Match Rating: DUD

Corporal Kirchner vs Iron Mike Sharpe

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this point. It feels somewhat teasing that I go from a DUD to a Corporal Kirchner match as it's not even a tag match, so he can't be carried! His opponent is Iron Mike Sharpe who is criminally underused considering he's one of the more interesting jobbers on the roster. Iron Mike Sharpe gets the chance to call himself Canada's greatest athlete before Kirchner comes out to no music but a MASSIVE pop! Oh wait, there is music, it's just covered by the crowd noise...and I can't believe I'm typing this about Kirchner. Massive USA chant breaks out and Sharpe cheap shots Kirchner to start in control. Kirchner reverses an Irish whip and almost botches a monkey flip. He hits three dropkicks and thats enough to send Sharpe to the outside in front of a group of awkward looking police officers. Wouldn't security or stewards have been more convenient? Kirchner misses an atomic drop and Sharpe rolls through locking on a headlock. Kirchner struggles to fight out but when he does, he eats a series of shoulderblocks. He does hit a back body drop and follows up by teasing a kick between the legs spot...but doesn't. You know the spot, the low blow that isn't actually a low blow because it's the top of your leg. Either way, Kirchner gets booed for not doing it and both men have a test of strength. Of course, the heel cheap shots his way to control but its brief as Kirchner kicks his way to an advantage. He hits an awkward suplex but Sharpe hits a clothesline in return. He celebrates instead of going for a pin but slaps Kirchner just for my benefit...I'm sure of it. USA chant starts but Kirchner gets thrown to the floor and then through the ringside barrier in a brutal looking spot! The barrier is wooden as well so the sound was just as brutal as the throw. Kirchner can't get back in the ring but the ref is distracted from the countout. Kirchner eventually gets back in the ring and hits a cross body for 2. Awful looking clothesline followed by a roll up also gets 2 for Kirchner. He misses a dropkick as Sharpe seems to be adjusting his forearm pad. He misses a forearm shot and Kirchner uses the forearm against Sharpe himself and that gets the 3. IKEA, where on earth do I start with that finish. How can he have his own forearm used against him with such force he's knocked out. I could suspend my disbelief, if the gap between head and forearm couldn't be measured in kilometres because it's so big. You've also got to wonder why at this point in his career, Kirchner still can't hit a proper looking clothesline?! The barrier spot saves this match from being a complete DUD. Match Rating: 1/4*

Ted Arcidi vs Barry O

Ted Arcidi is a weird one as he appears so sporadically I have no idea if he's being pushed or not. He looks so steroid swollen here, it's making me ache just looking at him. Barry O has no effect on Arcidi and Arcidi hits a big back body drop. O tries the cheap shot but he gets no where as Arcidi uses his strength to belittle O. O does manage to get some offense in, using punches and elbows but within 3 minutes, Arcidi locks in a bearhug and that gets the win. See you in 6 months again Ted? Match Rating: DUD

Hulk Hogan (WWE Champ)/Junkyard Dog vs The Funk Brothers

Main event time and after weeks of hype on Championship Wrestling, Hogan is finally here to have JYD's back. Massive pop for JYD and Hogan, like twice the noise of anyone else we've seen tonight. It's so loud, I can't tell you who's music they came out to but I'll assume it was Hogan because...Hogan. The faces start off aggressively as they clear house of the Funks with JYD even using his chain on Dory. Hogan uses JYD's head to send Terry out the ring as JYD and Dory legally start. Terry tries to run in with the branding iron but ref Danny Davis stops him as things slow down. Terry and JYD face off and lock up in the corner. Terry misses a corner charge and JYD works the arm and no sells Terry's headbutts. JYD rams Terry's head into the turnbuckle and Dory tags in. The two do the criss-cross spot but Dory ends up doing it alone before missing a dropkick. The Funks regroup before Hogan tags in to big cheers. He puts a headlock on Dory but JYD protects him when Hogan is whipped into the corner. Another lock up before the Funks mess up a the same corner spot but Terry ends up protecting Hogan by accident. This means Terry loses it in frustration and the Funks have to regroup again (while Terry manages to trip in the wires at ringside). Back in the ring, Hogan blocks a slam by Dory before hitting numerous ones of his own to both Funk brothers meaning the Funk's have to regroup once again. Dory comes back in the ring and again can't slam Hogan who again, nails numerous slams of his own on the Funk brothers. Terry comes back in but Hogan has control with punches before tagging in JYD and he hits a clothesline. He misses a follow up elbow and Dory tags in and works over JYD with some nice uppercuts. Terry back in and the Funks double team JYD before Terry chokes JYD behind the refs distracted back. JYD with a poor back suplex and Terry ends up in the wrong corner. Hogan tags in and cleans house again. He puts Terry on the top rope but Dory pearl harbours him. Terry chokes Hogan with something as the ref gets distracted once again. JYD breaks it up before he brings Jimmy Hart in the ring. Terry manages to choke JYD with his whip but Hogan comes in and clotheslines Terry for the 3! The faces celebrate and pose to crowd afterwards and that's it for the show. Messy finish and a lot of stalling but there was still some entertaining moments in the match. Not much action from Hogan and JYD was his normal self. Not much mention of King Kong Bundy either despite this being one of the last major house shows before Wrestlemania. Crowd of course loved it and I got a kick out of seeing Dory Funk JR vs Hulk Hogan, even though it was briefer than brief. Match Rating: *

So we have 9 blog debutants this week including a certain Mr Jake Roberts. He got a solid 5 mainly because of his psychology within the match. Ricky Steamboat did the best this week due to his performance in his match being superb. Bret could've have done just as good if only he didn't stop selling the arm! The main event was nothing special so mid-range points for everyone involved in that. Finally, decent showing for Tito and Macho and they picked up what I'd expect them to pick up in a match between the two. Hello Turnbucklers! It's our last SNME before Wrestlemania 2 (ITS COMING!) so you'd think this should put some fuel in the tank and get us really pumped! Looking at the card, we have a WWE Title match and a Tag Team Title match. King Kong Bundy is also on the card so hopefully he'll come out looking like a monster at the end of the show. The Boxing Match I don't expect much from but we shall see! I've linked the entire show below for anyone who wants to check it out! Onwards we go people...

The Show:

We start the show off with Mean Gene interrupting Mr T's workout session. Mr T rants because of said interruption but stops to claim that he will kick Bob Orton's arse in a boxing match later! He growls to send us into the opening credits! Got to say, Mr T's punches were really weak looking.

Our commentators tonight are Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura who run the down the card as per!

We get a clip of Piper's Pit a few weeks ago where Hogan crashed the segment to sign Bob Orton's open boxing contract on behalf of Mr T to set up tonight's match.

Back to Mean Gene who is with Roddy Piper and Boxing Bob Orton. Piper brings out a picture of Mr T with Boy George and proceeds to rinse Mr T. Orton says there's no Hogan to back him up in the match. Pretty poor promo considering the ammo Piper has to use on the way to Wrestlemania.

We see clips of Mr T training before he's back with Mean Gene. He says he's ready and he likes 'to take men out.' That explains the Boy George picture at least... He says he doesn't care about Piper and neither of them are nothing but chumps! Fightin' talk.

Bob Orton vs Mr T (Boxing Match)

They're already both in the ring when we return although I was expecting to see Mr T get his own entrance. Piper tries to get a cheap shot in but it's ultimately no sold by Mr T before Orton pearl harbours Mr T to begin the match. What else can I say about this other than it was a fake boxing match with the added intrigue of Piper at ringside attempting to get into Mr T's head. Eventually it breaks down completely and Piper ends up hitting Orton before Mr T cleans house sending Orton outside for the countout. Piper comes in and it looks like he's ready to square off with T. Piper spits and T accepts. It doesn't get too far as Orton pearl harbours Mr T and the heels put the boots to him. Piper whips him with his belt as Orton holds him down. The heels celebrate before Mr T stops selling the attack and challenges them more. The match itself was a fake boxing match, so take that for what you will but the aftermath was great until Mr T stopped selling it. The visual of Piper whipping Mr T was great and it looked like there was very little holding back. I'm sure in 1986, the sight of a celebrity being whipped was HUGE for the audience. What would've been great would have been Mr T selling the attack all the way to the back, but he didn't even sell it after the heels exited the ring. Match Rating: DUD

After the match Mr T is with Mean Gene again! He says no one has ever 'whooped him' in public before like Piper just did. He wants Piper and he don't like that the heels are dirty! The crowd I'd have expected to be a little more noisy for that but they were hardly noticable.

Still with Mean Gene and he's joined by Bobby Heenan and King Kong Bundy. Bundy wants Hogan but he isn't getting him tonight apparently. Heenan has a contract with him for Hogan to sign for Bundy to get a title shot!

King Kong Bundy vs Steve Gatorwolf

Bell rings and Bundy goes straight to it sending Gatorwolf down with elbows and chops. He hits an avalanche in the corner and insists on a 5 count to get the VERY quick win! He gets on the mic after the match and screams about wanting Hogan. He's starting to look stronger once again as we head towards Wrestlemania and that's what he needs but he started us his run last year with squashes, then had normal matches for most the year...and now he's back to squashes. I'd like to think a bit more care and consistency would've made him a much more legitimate challenge to Hogan at this point. It seems to me that the only person who could be a legitimate threat to Hogan's title at this point would've been Piper once again. Match Rating: DUD

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with an agitated Don Muraco. He says Mr Fuji has the flu and that Hogan is behind it. He says Mr Fuji has found him a replacement manager for the night...and it's Bobby Heenan! Heenan says that anytime anyone gets in the ring with Hogan, he will have their back! 

Still with Mean Gene and this time he's joined by Hulk Hogan. He says when your the champion you have to expect anything and everything. The only thing on his mind in the Heenan and Fuji switch but luckily the crowd will keep their eyes on them. They'll have to break Hogan to take the title but no one has done that before!

Hulk Hogan (WWE Champ) vs Don Muraco [WWE Title Match]

It's title match time as Hogan comes out to a much more subtle pop than we're used to. He comes out to Real American as well which Vince McMahon shills as awesome. Muraco gets the early control with strikes to Hogans back as the crowd chants for Hogan. Hogan counters an irish whip and levels Muraco with a back body drop followed by the dreaded back rake. Heenan gets up on the apron but gets knocked off for his troubles. A clothesline in the corner sends Muraco to the mat before an atomic drop sends him flying outside. Hogan follows him outside and sends him into the ringpost before throwing him back in the ring. A slugfest is won by Hogan and he gets a 2 count. Hogan manages to lock on a bearhug but it's eventually broken up by a headbutt from Muraco. Muraco hits a nice leg drop and rallies Hogan with kicks and knees for a 2 count. He continues to beat on Hogan using an asian spike and more knee lifts to Hogan's face as the crowd chant Hogan again, although they're not as loud as you'd assume. Muraco hits a slow side Russian leg sweep before hitting another asian spike from the second rope for a 2 count. Hogan 'hulks up' and no sells Muraco's punches before hitting many of his own. Big boot, leg drop but Heenan breaks up the cover for the DQ win for Hogan. Hogan chokes Heenan but King Kong Bundy attacks from behind! Muraco holds Hogan in the corner as Bundy avalanches Hogan time after time after time! Hogan flops down like a wet napkin before Muraco sets him for numerous splashes by Bundy. Hogan sells it like death and the crowd are in a hushed state of despair it seems! That's more like it for Bundy! Now he's a legitimate threat AND it's more personal! Muraco got more offense in the match then Hogan's previous opponents and gained some solid heat for his role in the aftermath. All in all, now I'm starting to care about Wrestlemania's main event. Match Rating: *3/4

We see Hogan being loaded into an ambulance but hey, Mean Gene is on the scene to report and find out what hospital he's off to.

We get a pretaped interview with the tag champs, The Dream Team. They overlook the loss they suffered against the Bulldogs a few weeks back. Hammer calls the Bulldogs a circus act and says they are the best team. Beefcake pipes in over Hammer's shoulder that they're the best looking too apparently. Hammer's hair says different.

The British Bulldogs vs The Dream Team (Tag Team Champs) [Tag Team Title Match]

The Bulldogs have been pushed to the moon so far in 1986 so you've got to assume it's a given their getting the titles soon. Even the champs themselves haven't looked as good as the Bulldogs have, even losing to them on Championship Wrestling. Both teams get jobber entrances however as Valentine and Dynamite start us off. Dynamite hits an atomic drop followed by headbutts from him and then Davey. Valentine is suplexed by Davey before they double shoulder tackle Hammer. Valentine begs for mercy but cheap shots Dynamite to get control. Dynamite and Beefcake botch a sequence but Dynamite takes control not long after. In comes Davey who lifts Beefcake up by his arm repeatedly. Beefcake eats an elbow from Davey and in comes Valentine. He gets press slammed for his troubles and that gets a 2 count. Dynamite comes in who works over Valentine with stomps and knees followed by a German suplex! He hits another headbutt and gets another 2 count. No offense from the champs still has Dynamite hits a knee drop from the second rope before Davey comes in for a slugfest with Hammer. He does manage to hit a dropkick and small package Hammer but it only gets a 2. Dynamite Kid in but who eats an atomic drop by Hammer, who tags in Beefcake and the champs finally get some offense. A ruckus kicks off outside the ring with the two teams and their managers. Back in the ring, Beefcake is being double teamed by the Bulldogs (something non wrestling fans might not understand at first read) but he does manage to fight out. Hammer comes in to help with a double leg stomp and he locks in the Figure 4. Dynamite breaks it up as Ventura lambasts him for cheating. Another slugfest between Davey and Hammer ends with Hammer coming off the second rope with an elbow for a 2 count. Awesome shoulderbreaker by Hammer gets another 2. More double teaming by the champs as Beefcake tags in. He hits a snapmare before hitting a double stomp but that only gets a 2. Valentine back in, he hits an elbow...and that gets 2! Dynamite cuts Hammer off at the top rope and sends him flying with a slam. He himself goes up top and comes off with a signature missile dropkick but that only gets 2. The crowd thought that was three as Dynamite gets ANOTHER 2 of a clothesline. Suplex to Valentine but the count is broken up by Beefcake! Valentine and Dynamite collide in the ring and they both go down. Hammer is on top as they fall and he gets the 3! Wow what a match! Halfway through I was worried it was going to be a drawn out squash match for the Bulldogs but how wrong I was. The champs just couldn't kill off Dynamite Kid. My only gripe is the ending as after all the punishment Dynamite took, the collision was weak so the 3 count looked unnatural. I'd hate to say it, but that would've been the time for the managers to get involved for the messy finish to keep everyone looking strong. I'd also have liked to have seen a bit more from Beefcake on the offense because I just can't seem to think of any memorable feature of his moveset. Even so, such a good match and the crowd were loving it, especially as it ticked down. Match Rating: ***1/4

Into the...hospital...with Mean Gene who's with the front doors of a local hospital. He says he will update us with Hogan's condition soon enough. You don't need to Gene, let the intrigue continue into your next shows eh?

We get to see the entirety of Hogan's entrance/music video ... the now famous Real American. It's patriotic and it's got a catchy riff so I'm sure 1980's USA masturbated to this.

Into the pretape with Mean Gene who's with Adrian Adonis. Adonis says he woke up this morning and wanted to be Mrs Adonis. His opponent tonight is Junkyard Dog and it's back to the fire hydrant with him apparently!

Adrian Adonis vs Junkyard Dog

I guess we're straight into the next match here and it kicks off fast! JYD gets the early advantage sending Adonis flying into the ringpost and then getting him caught up in the ropes. The crowd goes crazy before Adonis is flung back into the back by JYD before he follows up with a clothesline for 2. JYD picks him up and plants him with a ... jumping neck bump thing. Adonis fights back with uppercuts and a slap. JYD counters a whip and send Adonis flying over the tunbuckle. Jimmy Hart consoles him on the outside as JYD struts around effeminately in the ring as if to ring his opponent were somewhat camp. Debatable Mr Dog? I guess not. JYD drags both Adonis and Hart back into the ring, nails a headbutt and then sends both of them flying back outside as Ventura calls him a bully. Headbutts by JYD for 2 as Hart puts Adonis' foot on the rope and then trips JYD in the corner. Adonis distracts the ref while Hart ties JYD to the bottom ropes. Adonis chokes out JYD while the ref is distracted again. The ref manhandles Adonis off of JYD allowing JYD to get free from the ropes. Adonis manages to get another 2 count before trying to hit a piledriver but it knocks out the ref. JYD sends Adonis into Jimmy Hart and JYD manages to get the 3! After the match Adonis clocks JYD with Harts megaphone before having a tantrum about losing. Match was plenty of fun and all but technically, what you'd expect. Crowd once again loved every bit so what can you do. Match Rating: *1/2

Into the ... hospital ... with Mean Gene who's with a miscellaneous doctor. The doctor tells us Hogan has sustained injuries to his back, ribs and neck. He's going to get some X-Rays which McMahon hopes are negative...and that's all for this edition! Onto the scores me thinks!

So there we have it, some decent points for a handful of Superstars. This episode of SNME was basically the one opportunity to really cement Bundy as the top monster going into Wrestlemania and sending Hogan to the hospital did just that. Dynamite Kid's performance in the tag match was steller so he scores high. In fact, it puts him into the Top 10 overall All Star Search scorers. JYD moved up 2 places also but Tito, Savage and Orndorff all didn't appear in this addition. Next edition we have an episode of Championship Wrestling AND a House Show so hopefully I'll see you then!

Hello Turnbucklers! It's February 1986 and although we don't have any big featured shows...we do have lots of television to get through. We're getting ever closer to Wrestlemania 2 and I'm hoping some feuds will starts to mold into place. We have one or two debuts in this one and a massive title match. Not so much Hogan but plenty of Piper, Savage, Steamboat and more big names! So...will we get more opportunities to vote for The Wrestling Album? Will Dan Spivey still look like a spare Barry Windham? Will Moondog Spot get an unexpected title run? Let's find out!

The Show:

So let's start with the 1st of February. Bruno Sammartino and Vince McMahon are on commentary and they run down the card until Adrian Adonis interrupts and says something camp...I didn't quite catch what it was though.

Moondog Spot/Rusty Brooks vs Ricky Steamboat/King Tonga

Big pop for the faces when they come out while Sammartino tries to talk but the audio is well off. Highlights in this one are Steamboats early flurry of arm drags, Moondog Spot actually getting some offense in, King Tonga's sunset flip, the faces double team maneuvers and King Tonga's thrust kick. Tonga hits a headbutt on Rusty Brooks for the 3. Elementary my dear and fair play for giving Tonga the pin. Squash Rating: ***

Update with Lord Al and this week it focusses on Mr T. Apparently he's in peak physical condition and would always be ready to get back into the ring. Maybe that's a hint that he may appear sometime in future? Who knows...

We get another look at the nominees for best personilty in Land of 1000 Dances video. Uncle Elmer's pig gets my vote.

Jeff Cripley vs Adrian Adonis

Big heat for Adonis...and I mean...big heat! Wow! You can't hear the commentators over the 'faggot' chants. 1980's USA...you should be ashamed! Adonis takes his time to dis-robe and this only riles the crowd more so. Very, very quick squash as Adonis hits the DDT after 1 minute for the 3. Fair play to McMahon and Adonis for their bravery in this gimmick change...will be interesting to see how far it goes. Squash Rating: *

Into the back with Mean Gene who runs down an upcoming house show. He's joined by 'Cowboy' Bob Orton. He talks about Orndorff's cast and says he has an idea to even the score. He says Orndorff has no idea what to do with himself. He runs out of time and the music plays him out. A bit subdued but it was harmless.

The Iron Sheik/Nikolai Volkoff vs Jim Powers/SD Jones

It seems like ages since we've seen the evil foreigners and SD Jones, not that that's too much of a bad thing. I truly missed the Soviet national anthem but the crowd definitely haven't as the heat is a strong as ever. Sheik of course riles up the crowd before the lock up and he's so easy to hate. Speaking of hate, Corporal Kirchner comes out to wave the USA flag to big cheers. Have I ever mentioned Sheik uses a lovely back suplex because he uses it again here. In fact, more suplexes from Sheik before he locks on the Camel Clutch for the easy win. Kirchner runs in afterwards to take them both on and he actually comes out on top and sends them reeling to a big pop. Please tell me Kirchner isn't getting over. Squash Rating: **

Wrestlemania 2...it's coming!

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by Paul Orndorff who is still wearing the cast. Apparently some town is giving him the key to the city. Music plays over Orndorff's promo but keeps going on and off so I can't concentrate on what he says. I do catch that Orndorff is going to show Mean Gene how to hunt and he'll show Orton how to take care of business.

The official WWE magazine is advertised next and it looked like a crap issue that month.

Hercules vs Paul Dose

Herc is without Freddie Blassie for this one....oh wait, spoke to soon, he appears on commentary to yell about Kirchner. Herc meanwhile rallies through his strength based moveset including the normal scoop slams and strikes. Blassie challenges Kirchner to a future tag match with Sheik and Volkoff. Hercules locks on the torture rack not long after and that gets the win. Another poor squash match for Hercules. Squash Rating: *

It's Piper's Pit time and first comes out Lou Albano while Piper calls him fat. Albano ain't impressed and he's brought George Steele with him. They talk about Savage's abuse of Liz and how he may have her hypnotised. Steele reacts to the mention of Liz and then chases Orton off the set when he makes fun of Liz. Piper rips into Steele until Steele innocently calls Piper a girl and that ends the segment. 

We get an advert for WWE's action figures and Old Spice.

The Killer Bees vs AJ Petruzzi/Dave Barbie

We join the match as it's already underway and the Bee's firmly in control. They use some cool looking double team maneuvers, working over the leg of Barbie. Brunzell almost gets the win with a small package but it only gets a 2. More double team maneuvers on the legs by the Bees before Brunzell hits a nice shinbreaker. Blair comes in, hits a nice powerslam and gets the 3. A bit sloppier than normal from the Bee's but to be fair, Dave Barbie really wasn't the right jobber for them. Squash Rating: **

The British Bulldogs vs The Dream Team (Tag Team Champs)

This is a non-title match that was set up on the last episode of Championship Wrestling on Piper's Pit. Decent heat for the champs and the Bulldogs get a good reaction. Valentine and Dymanite start with Dynamite coming out on top with an atomic drop and a strong shoulderblock that sends Hammer flailing into the ropes. Valentine takes control with elbows and a scoop slam before tagging in Beefcake who gets a 2 count. Davey Boy tags in and works over Beefer's arm using impressive strength. Valentine back in who continues working over Davey's legs before going for the figure 4. Dynamite breaks it up, tags back in and hits a nice backbreaker on Beefcake for 1 and a headbutt for 2. Kid hits a nice snap suplex before tagging out to Davey who hits a crisp powerslam. Valentine runs in, ends up in a firemans carry while Dynamite jumps off his back, onto Beefcake with a diving headbutt for a 3 count and the crowd pops huge. I kinda think they assume they won the titles which they didn't. Big win for the Bulldogs non the less and this puts them firmly in the chase for the belts. Match Rating: *1/2

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Jimmy Hart. Mean Gene says he looks weird and Jimmy says he's one to talk. Hart brings in Adrian Adonis and Terry Funk. Adonis says he woke up one morning and was Mrs Adonis? Funk says it smells bad and starts smelling Mean Gene. He says the smell is JYD and he's been here. Adonis calls JYD 'black lassie' before Funk rants on about some poker players that goes way over my head. Funk mentions Vince McMahon being the owner which is a weird one before the music plays them out. That's all for this weeks episode...so onto the next...


Tito Santana (IC Champ) vs Randy Savage [IC Title Match]

Just thought I'd add this match into the mix as it's important moving forward. This is from the Boston house show that I couldn't find but luckily I managed to find 1 out of 2 matches I wanted to see from that card. Noticable mixed reaction for Tito when he comes out. Of course we get a lot of stalling by Savage to start us off until he tries to use his heel tactics like a thumb to the eye to gain control. It doesn't really work for him as everytime he thinks he's gained control, Tito fights back. They brawl on the outside briefly before Santana hits a nice scoop slam back in the rng. He goes for the Flyign Jalapeno but misses however he does manage a back suplex not long later. Savage takes control with double ax handles and clotheslines. He goes up top and hits another ax handle before throwing Santana out to the floor to hit another one. Back in the ring and Santana counters Savage allowing himself the chance to use his forearms and elbows but only gets a 2 count. There's a double KO spot followed by a weak ref bump that doesn't really have any relevance as he still manages a 2 count. Small package by Santana also gets a 2. Savage goes for a knee drop but misses and injures his knee. This allows Santana to attack and work over the knee. All great psychology as Santana goes for the figure 4 but Savage escapes quickly. They move over to the apron where Savage reaches into his tights but Santana suplexes him back in the ring for 2. He goes for the figure 4 again and Savage escaps to the apron again. This time he does manage to get something out of his tights and when Santana tries to suplex him back in the ring again, he gets nailed with whatever the object was. Savage pins him and we have a NEW Intercontinental Champion to a suprisingly big pop. Great match with a fast pace and good psychology. It's definitely time to end Tito's singles run with a belt as evidenced by the crowd reactions in this one. Looking forward to Savage's reign as IC champ though. Match Rating: ***

Onto the 8th February episode of Championship Wrestling! Once again, the commentators are Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino. They run down the card while George Steele wanders about with flowers nearby.

Bob Bradley/Terry Gibbs vs Hillbilly Jim/Uncle Elmer

Oh lord, what a way to start this episode. No Cousin Luke this week which must be the smallest of mercies. Hillbilly Jim starts us off with Gibbs and he hits the safest scoop slams I've ever seen. Hillbilly Jim locks in a DOUBLE bearhug briefly before the heels take control. Its not for long as Bradley eats an atomic drop before Elmer tags in. He hits a poor shoulderblock and a rope assisted leg drop for 3. Poor and Hillbillies still do nothing for this British lad. Squash Rating: *

Update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Wrestlemania 2 ... the hype has begun and we get a nice montage of Wrestlemania 1.

Big John Studd/King Kong Bundy vs Darryl Bowland/Ivan McDonald

Big heat as per for the heels, especially for Heenan who proclaims himself the Manager of the Year...but he gets no arguments from me! Just pointing out, how Scottish is the name Ivan McDonald? McDonald oversells for Studd and it looks unnatural to say the least. He does bump like a bandit for the big men, but if only it looked a little more smooth all would be fine. Finish comes with the inevitable avalanche in the corner and splash on the mat. Bundy wants the 5 count and he gets it! Bundy still looks like a monster which is all good, Studd seems to be losing his fear factor and I think would at this point benefit from being around Bundy less. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Roddy Piper. He comes in smiling, wielding the Boston Herald. He reads out some article that seems very anti-Bruno Sammartino in regards to their upcoming cage match (happening later on that night). Didn't really dig this promo to be honest.

Mr X vs Tito Santana

Tito doesn't look his normal happy self it seems and I wonder why that may be. Slow start but with nice chain wrestling descends into headlocks and arm drags all made by Tito. Mr X does get some offense in but not for long as Tito regains control. He hits a big back body drop and its not long after the figure 4 is applied and Tito gets the win. Meh. Squash Rating: **

Wrestlemania 2...ITS COMING!

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Bruno Sammartino. He rips into Piper and talks about Bob Orton not being around to get involved in their upcoming match. They rip some guy called Charlie Manning and Bruno says he's ready for his match with Piper! We get some Italian which I don't actually speak and that's it.

AJ Petruzzi/The Gladiator vs The British Bulldogs

Last week we saw the Bulldogs get a big win against the champs so their momentum is growing and the crowd response to them is growing alongside it. Dynamite hits a nice missile dropkick and a nice snap suplex. Davey Boy hits a nice standing suplex for 2 before Gladiator comes in. Amazing finish as Dynamite half-suplexes Petruzzi onto Davey who sits atop the turnbuckle, into the powerslam position which he hits from the top rope for 3! That looked so awesome and the match was nothing special until that finish. Squash Rating: ****

Piper's Pit time and he starts by moaning about the fans making Bob Orton take his cast off. He introduces Orton who comes in and he's now Boxing Bob Orton. He's putting up an open contract for anyone to fight him. Just when we think we have all the answers, Piper changes the motherfucking questions! Damn him...heel.

Paul Dose vs Randy Savage (IC Champ)

Good lord, Liz looks amazing! Her and Macho are sporting lovely matching sequin blue attire. His reactions are getting bigger too if possible. Before we start, out comes George Steele who hands Liz some flowers. Macho spots this and goes batshit crazy at Liz before destroying the flowers! Somewhere, a florists heart just broke. The match itself is short work for Savage who starts by pearl harbouring Dose...and quickly follows up with his Flying Elbow for 3. Just angle advancement with an added elbow drop for poor Paul Dose. I'm still not too excited for Macho vs Steele as it seems to be building towards, time has just not been kind to this very 80's angle. Squash Rating: *

Wrestlemania 2...IT'S COMING!!!

We get another look at the various songs on The Wrestling Album...and it's still not sounding any better than previous.

The Iron Sheik/Nikolai Volkoff vs Corporal Kirchner/George Steele

Of course we get the Soviet National Anthem to big heat...however I think it's lovely! Kirchner's music interrupts halfway through but he's partner-less. Oh wait! Kirchner with a suplex and Steele is tagged in. The heels double team him but Steele no sells, grabs a plastic chair and levels the heels. That of course gets the DQ win for Sheik and Volkoff. Pointless yet painful. Squash Rating: *

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's interrupted by Don Muraco and Mr Fuji. They talk about Liz in a pretty creepy manner. In fact, the word 'binoculars' is used so make your own mind up. They rip on Bruno Sammartino before Muraco has to stop and think what he's actually talking about. Finally he talks about Ricky Steamboat and how he thinks he's Bruce Lee. Muraco says he doesn't mind being tied up and rallies through some stereotypical martial arts noises before he yells the show to a finish!


It's the 15th of February's Championship Wrestling now and again, Vince and Bruno are on commentary.

The Gladiator vs Superfly Afi

Superfly Afi is supposedly the cousin of Jimmy Snuka and he certainly looks like him...if not a little slimmer. He comes out to what seems like porn music. The crowd shits all over both men here so it seems the crowd don't really want Snuka's cousin. Chain wrestling to start as the crowd chant boring. Seriously, they are really letting these two have it. Afi works over the legs of the Gladiator before he reaches the ropes. There seems to be one bloke in the crowd who's hating this match more so than everyone else. Now Gladiator works over Afi's legs but it's not long before the roles are reversed once again. I think I'm about to start chanting boring myself to be honest. Afi nails a chop, a headbutt, a scoop slam and he finishes with the Superfly Splash. Not a good debut for Mr Afi and I don't understand why they need to shill him as a Snuka.2. Oh well. Squash Rating: *

This week's update with Lord Al is about The British Bulldogs. We see clips of them beating the champs a couple of weeks previous.

We get an advertisement for the Wrestling Album...it's still dreadful. Straight after...we see clips of the Land of 1000 Dances video and we can still vote for the best personality within it.

Norton AntiVirus Rusty Brooks/Steve Lombardi vs King Tonga/Ricky Steamboat

Strangely enough, Tonga and Steamboat come out to Ric Flair's music. The same music Flair was using as early as 1986. Dragon and Lombardi start off with a quick pace and Steamer nails a cross body. Tonga tags in and uses his array of strikes so send Lombardi to the mat. Dragon back in and the faces do some nice double teaming. Tonga comes in, nails a nice thrust kick to the face followed by a headbutt for the 3 count. Rusty Brooks did try and break the pin...but fell on his fat face while attempting to get in the ring. I feel like I like Tonga more just because he's appearing with Steamboat so much and that can't be good. I love his thrust kick though. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's with the now former Intercontinental Champion, Tito Santana. He talks about how Savage screwed him out of the title and next week he will show the people what happened. He brings out some object which Savage apparently used to win the title and Mean Gene claims it to be 32 ounces. In drugs terms alone, that's a lot. ARIBA!

The Hart Foundation vs Tony Stetson/Lanny Poffo

Bret is still Brett I should point out. Leaping Lanny regales us all with a lovely poem about the Foundation which Jimmy Hart sells like he's just been cursed. Poffo controls the very early goings suprisingly and in comes Stetson who first gets booed for some reason, and then gets his arse handed to him by the Foundation. Bret comes in and hits that awesome backbreaker that he does. It's not long after that Stetson suffers a Hart Attack and the Foundation get the 3. The Foundation, The Bulldogs and The Bee's are keeping this tag division one of the best parts of this 1986 product and to think who the recent past champions have been. Squash Rating: ***

Wrestlemania 2 ... ITS COMING!!!

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by the Junkyard Dog! I have no idea what he says but it is about the Funk Brothers and he mentions his wife. He forgets Dory Funk's name and says something about 'World Wide Dog' ... and that is our 'I Beg Your Pardon of the Week'

Joe Mirto/Iron Mike Sharpe vs The Killer Bees

More solid tag team action for us now with the Killer Bees! Quick start with Blair and Sharpe with Blair using a nice stalling headscissors and many an arm drag! Sharpe recollects his thoughts on the outside before heading back in the ring. Sharpe growls like a Mario villain I should point out but I actually kind of rate him. Another stalling headscissors for the Bee's before the heels take control briefly. I meant briefly...as not long after the Bee's go back to double team maneauvers and a dropkick gets the win for the Bee's. The issue with the Bee's is simply they seem to be too vanilla! Then again, every promotion needs solid workers for the big names to work with. Squash Rating: ***

Piper's Pit time and he's with Boxing Bob Orton. He brings out Jose Luis Rivera and of course, Piper rips the ever loving shit out of him for being a jobber. Rivera cuts a shocking, emotionless promo and Piper does everything he can to drag something out of him. It turns out Rivera is Orton's upcoming boxing opponent and I don't like his chances. I hope I never have to hear Rivera talk again! If the Bee's are Vanilla...this guy is just frozen water.

Boxing Bob Orton vs Jose Luis Rivera

So there's punches, shuffles, dodges and eventually a knock out punch for Orton. It made Orton look strong enough but surely it's Piper they should be focussing on? Hopefully it'll make sense in due course. Squash Rating: *

Terry Funk vs Junkyard Dog

Well, this is quite the big match for TV in 1986! These two have been feuding for a good few months and the match starts off quick and heated on the outside with some brawling. Back in the ring, JYD hits a big back body drop followed by his canine headbutts as the crowd eat it all up with big JYD chants. They trade some stiff right hands before JYD levels Funk's head in the corner repeatedly and then again in the opposite corner and again in another corner until Jimmy Hart tries to get involved. JYD chases him around the ring and manages to get a 2 count on Funk. Funk ends up tied in the ropes as Hart tries to brand JYD from behind. It's an epic failure though as JYD gets the branding iron. However, Dory Funk Jr appears out of no where, levels JYD and helps his brother level JYD. The heels continue the assault until jobbers come out to clear the ring. JYD gets the win via DQ but this was an introduction to Dory and very much storyline advancement for this JYD/Funk feud. Match Rating: *

Into the back with Mean Gene who's joined by Jimmy Hart. He's well excited over what just happened to JYD as the Funk's appear. Terry introduces his brother Dory Funk JR who's dressed as a cowboy. Terry tells a story of how his brother killed a dog which is lovely. He name drops the NWA and says that Hogan has wiped their name off the map - wow! It's going to be the Funks versus JYD and Hogan soon enough apparently and that's all for this episode.


Into the final episode of Championship Wrestling for February 1986 and its the 22nd. Our commentators are Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura. Vince tells us Bruno is on vacation while Jesse says he needs a permanent vacation.

Dave Barbie/Les Thornton/Rusty Brooks vs Corporal Kirchner/Pedro Morales/Dan Spivey

Christ, what a collection of talent in this one. To think Morales is a former WWE champion as well. He starts us off with Les Thornton and works in some headlocks which he refuses to let go of. In comes Kirchner to take the standards higher. He botches a suplex and an irish whip (!) but actually hits a solid backbreaker. In comes Spivey who looks huge in comparison to everyone else in the ring. Morales tagged back in who cleans house of the heels with vintage looking strikes. Spivey tags back in, hits a bulldog and that gets the 3. Crap. Squash Rating: *

Update time with Lord Al and this week it's all about Roddy Piper! Weirdly enough, the clip is of Boxing Bob's previous match last week but apparently Piper is coaching Orton. Who can possibly stop him? That's the question!

Don Muraco vs Jim Londos

Muraco says he would like to dedicate his piledriver to Jesse Ventura which to me is slightly random despite them both being heels. We have a new jobber as well in Jim Londos! Of course, Muraco spends the whole of the match using his strength and using the bottom rope to jab the throat of Londos. One Ventura dedicated piledriver later, Muraco is our winner. That was the definition of an average squash match...fuck all happened but Muraco still looked strong. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by Tito Santana. He's still pissed with losing the IC title and even more pissed with the producers for not showing the footage. As to why they can't show that footage but will replay any other footage is beyond me. Ariba!

Paul Orndorff vs The Mohawk Kid

Another new jobber! I'm being spoilt recently. The match starts off very quick and I barely blink before Orndorff is coming off the top rope with a ax handle. The crowd is on fire for Orndorff and he hits a nice suplex. What's strange is he's wrestling like a big bad heel with a lot of aggression but the crowd love it. Orndorff hits a clothesline and follows up with a piledriver and that gets the 3. It's frustrating the Orndorff seems to be in limbo at the moment, it seems like he's being wasted. The crowd is so hot for him, but his character is interesting with his subtle attitude issues. He brings a kid in the ring afterwards...strips the kid (!)...and they pose together. Squash Rating: **

Wrestlemania 2...IT'S COMING!!!

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by JYD who looks somewhat anxious. It's because Hogan isn't around to watch his back. Once again, I can't understand a fucking word of JYD's promo...I heard 'scratch' 'snake' 'Dory' 'Betsy' 'Sue' and 'dust'. Make your own promo up with those.

Paul Roma vs Adrian Adonis

The 'f*ggot' chants are already coming thick and fast before the bell even rings. Adonis is wearing a lovely soft pink attire but he looks like a bottle of Yazoo. McMahon seems infuriated that Adonis has bows in his hair. Roma actually starts off in control using a series of hip tosses but Adonis takes control with a cheeky kick to the stomach. He hits a scoop slam and follows that by dropping Roma throat first on the top rope. They no sell each other's punches but Adonis avoids a charge, hits his DDT and that gets the 3 count. Another average squash match but I'd like to see Adonis in a featured feud. Squash Rating: **

Piper's Pit time and they have an open contract for anyone who has wrestled for WWE to face Boxing Bob. Shockingly, Hulk Hogan appears and nicks the mic from Piper. Hogan says he'd love to box with Orton but he has a friend who would love to fight Boxing Bob. That friend...it's only Mr T! Piper goes nuts and storms off! A fun quick little segment.

Bafflingly, we actually do get footage from Savage vs Santana at the Boston house show but for my review of that...well, I presume you already read it earlier in this edition.

Jim Powers/Scott McGhee vs The Dream Team (Tag Team Champs)

The faces start off in control until Valentine takes control with a hip toss followed by a scoop slam. In comes Beefcake who chokes Powers in the ropes. He makes his way to McGhee who manages to fight back against Hammer, including a weird scissor dropkick thing. In comes Powers who gets a 2 count on the Hammer but he manages to tag in Beefcake who hits a nice powerslam. Valentine back in who manages to lock on the Figure Four and that gets the elimentary win for the champs! The jobbers got more offense in than normal but another standard squash match in an episode full of them. Squash Rating: ****

So as you've just seen, a lot of wrestler's gaining points in February. Randy Savage brought in the biggest haul mainly due to his title win, quality of match and angle advancement with George Steele. The tag teams did well this month too, with quality matches the main reason for a good points haul for them, especially the Bulldogs. Bob Orton had a lot of focus on him which has been quite rare since starting the blog, so it was nice to give some decent points to him. Sivi Afi did pretty poorly and Dory Funk Jr I expect to gain his first points in the next edition. Hogan is still out in the lead, gaining two points this week for his appearance on Pipers Pit and being name dropped constantly by others. Savage, Piper, Orndorff and Valentine are all slowly but surely closing the points gap. Anyway, into March we go and towards Wrestlemania 2...IT'S COMING!!!
