WWE All Star Search #28 - Championship Wrestling (May 1986 part 2)

Hello Turnbucklers! Its edition #28 of our All Star Search and we're moving into the middle of March with two episodes of Championship Wrestling. You know the score, we probably won't have much to say about the matches but let's hope we get some good angle development. In the two episodes we have two relatively important matches. Kirchner vs Sheik is a continuation of the feud going on between the patriot and the evil foreigners and boy do I hope we're coming to the end of it. The Bulldogs vs the big lads is an interesting one because the Bulldogs have their title winning momentum while the big lads are on a downward spiral since Wrestlemania 2. Let's get on with it shall we?

The Show:

So let's kick off with the 10th May edition of Championship Wrestling. Our commentary team is Vince Mcmahon and Bruno Sammartino who run down the card.

Mike Angelo/Tiger Chung Lee vs Junkyard Dog/George Steele

The Haiti Kid is still with the faces and he's enjoying swinging his chain. Typical hijinks from Steele in this one until he gets caught in heel corner. Mike Angelo is freaking huge but a bite to the chest by Steele still manages to send him reeling. JYD comes in and hits a huge powerslam to Angelo in short order for the win. JYD is obviously stronger than he looks if he can slam Angelo like he did. After the match, there's an awkward stand off between Chung Lee and the faces while Angelo plays dead on the mat. It all comes to nothing and the faces celebrate! Not much to say about that one. Squash Rating: *

Its update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Jake Roberts! He asks whether Damien could be a tool used by evil worshippers? I think it's just a gimmick Al. We get a clip of a jobber getting snaked and that's all. No mention of the Steamboat angle once again.

Jimmy Jack Funk/Dory Funk vs Andre Malo/Dan King

Still no sign or mention of Terry Funk so I assume he's definitely left the WWF at this point. Bad timing though as the Funks could've been a good little faction. JJ shows plenty of aggression again but Dory just ups the game in terms of stiffness. Nice underhook suplex by Dory and the win comes with an awesome looking fallaway-powerslam move that I can't think I've seen before. Another case of not much to say except Jimmy Jack continues to impress me. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene who sends us to a Hulk Hogan promo. He rants on Macho Man and puts his hype down to Elizabeth. He puts Macho over quite well before claiming that he'll still win because this is America. Sigh.

The Killer Bees vs Iron Mike Sharpe/Joe Mirto

Always good to see Iron Mike! He always seems to have a sign with him claiming him to be Canada's Greatest Athlete. I can't help but imagine him making it by hand at home before the show! The Bee's are still coming out in their masks but inexplicably take them off for the match. Match is a typical Bee's affair with the head scissors making many an appearance. Bobby Heenan turns up on commentary who says he met with Jack Tunney. He's looking into what action the WWE is going to take over Andre the Giant and his no show from a few weeks previous. Heenan calls Andre a coward and says when he's done with it all, Andre will no longer be a part of WWE. By the way, the Bee's win with a poor looking powerslam on Mirto. Once again the Bee's are solid yet unspectacular and could really do with a featured storyline...that isn't with the Hart Foundation! Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined with Corporal Kirchner. They mention the Chernobyl explosion and somehow link it to the upcoming match between Kirchner and Nikolai Volkoff. Probably best not to mention a huge disaster that killed many a civilian...but hey, it happened to the enemy so why not.

Serge Jedoin vs Randy Savage (IC Champ)

Lots of stalling to start by Macho because...it's Macho in 1986. He really doesn't need to do his stalling schtick in these squash matches. Quite an audible Macho chant from a couple of lads in the crowd. Match finishes within a minute via an elbow drop from Macho and he's even nice enough to give another after the bell. Macho is another who needs a featured storyline after feuding with George Steele since forever. He still looks like a star after this one though. Squash Rating: *

Its time for the Flower Shop with Adrian Adonis and Jimmy Hart! He's joined by the Dream Team with Johnny V. They talk about their defeat at Wrestlemania 2 and blame it all on Ozzy Osbourne and two referees. They promise payback for the Bulldogs and that's all we have this week. If only Ozzy had actually done something of note at Wrestlemania and they'd have had a point.

Into the back with Lord Al who shows us clips of Saturday Night's Main Event whereby Jake Roberts absolutely destroyed Ricky Steamboat with his DDT on the concrete. Finally, it's nice to see it mentioned!

The Iron Sheik vs Corporal Kirchner

Well Christ, the pop for Kirchner is inexplicably loud. He even gets some patriotic signage from the crowd! I still can't him but he gets a massive USA chant up and running. He starts with a jumping headbutt and follows with a back body drop. Volkoff distracts from the outside and Sheik takes advantage. He hits a back body drop of his own before he locks on an abdominal stretch. Kirchner counters into a hip toss but misses the follow up elbow drop. Blassie gets involved and the ref does nothing but count before Sheik sends Kirchner flying outside. He scrambles back in the ring and manages a roll up on Sheik for 2. Sheik takes control again with a kick to the face as Vince admits Kirchner's wrestling ain't pretty to watch. Suplex attempt by Sheik is blocked and Kirchner hits a big one of his own. Kirchner picks up Sheik and levels him with a Samoan Drop! He makes the cover but Volkoff runs in for the DQ win for Kirchner. The heels give him boots until the Killer Bee's make the save. This will surely go down as a key moment in the Cold War but for now, it shall all continue. Crap match but the crowd enjoyed it. Match Rating: 1/4*

Into the back with Mean Gene and he's joined by the heels we've just seen give it legs. Freddie Blassie rants on about Kirchner before Volkoff gives it more of the same. I love Volkoff, he's like an old, drunk, Russian grandpa. They leave and are replaced by Macho Man! He has a copy of the WWE Magazine with Hogan on the cover. He says he's going to win the WWE Championship at the upcoming house show. Boston is his town, ohhh yeah!

Onto the 17th May edition of Championship Wrestling and our commentators are once again Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino!

Ted Arcidi/King Tonga vs Dave Barbie/The Gladiator

It's matches like these that make me sad. There is literally no one in this match I'm interested in currently. The Gladiator has been appearing on this blog since the very beginning...so how come no one has yet found out anything about him...including his height and weight? That's just poor admin from the agents in the back. Really nice back suplex by Tonga seems to be the only highpoint in this one before Arcidi gets the win with a bearhug. Complete snorefest. Squash Rating: *

It's update time with Lord Al and this week he's looking at Steamboat and Jake Roberts. Essentially its a full recap of the brutal SNME attack from a few weeks ago. Apparently Steamer is 100% fit and raring for some revenge!

The Hart Foundation vs Lanny Poffo/Don Driggers

It's the blue and black attack, the Hart Foundation! Lanny has brought some frisbees with him and of course, has a poem. It's awful as expected and the heels have to oversell it. The Harts attack quickly and we get some decent back and forth between Bret and Lanny. It doesn't last long but the Harts look awesome in this with plenty of double team moves. A Hart Attack on Barbie gets the win and it's all elementary from there! I say this every time but the tag division needs some solid programs to match the solid athletes within it. Squash Rating: ***

Into the back with...some guy...who runs down an upcoming house show card. Hulk Hogan comes in wearing his bandana like an eyepatch. He moans about Savage and Liz and even says he doesn't trust Elizabeth. He has a suprise for Savage though...it's called Hulkamania. Crap suprise if you ask me though.

Pedro Morales/Hillbilly Jim vs Moondog Spot/Cyclone Capone

What? No Moondog Rex? Where's our refunds?! The faces come out to Jim's awful country music and I wonder how former WWF champion Pedro Morales feels about that. Hillbilly Jim does a lovely yet crap cartwheel before the match. That is in fact our highlight of the entire match. The win comes for the faces via a Jim Big Boot. Test, eat your heart out. Squash Rating: *

Vince wants to know if there are any non-profit organisations that want to fund raise via WWE. Interesting concept for sure!

Into the back with SOME GUY and he's joined by Corporal Kirchner. In a weird political moment, he compares his feud with Nikolai Volkoff and the recent (at the time) Chernobyl disaster (the second time in recent months WWE have mentioned it on air) but has to add in a claim about it being a huge Russian conspiracy. Promo is unfortunately poor but hey, it's Kirchner. Merica!

Hercules vs Mike Sexton

Mike Sexton is one of my favourite jobbers...but only because he always dresses like a disco ball. Ernie Ladd makes a quick appearance on commentary and says everybody wants to be a wrestler...I, however, disagree. While all this is going on, Herc is throwing punches like no ones business and even Blassie gets some cheeky shots in. Hercules is not at all smooth in the ring although he's still very aggressive. The win comes for Herc after the torture rack and it was all boring as sin. Squash Rating: *

It's time for the Flower Shop with Adonis and Jimmy Hart. Adonis comes in looking like a sunblushed tomato and its not long before the faggot chants start up...and then repeat. Their guest today is the MACHO MAN and Liz. Adonis appreciates Liz's make up before Randy cuts a promo telling people not to be jealous of him. Adonis goes to give Liz flowers, changes his mind, and gives them Savage instead. Cheeky! Bit of a nothing segment though.

Tito Santana/Dan Spivey vs Steve Lombardi/Paul Christy

Tito is dropping down the card quite quickly now. He's Spivey's latest tag team partner and surely someone has to gel with him, right? RIGHT? Wrong, match is unspectacular and crowd barely even wake up for Tito. Finish comes with a Spivey bulldog. Vince says we may see more of this team...and that sounds like a threat to me. Squash Rating: *

The British Bulldogs (Tag Team Champs) vs King Kong Bundy/Big John Studd

Straight into the main event now and to be fair, this is a biggie for Championship Wrestling. The Bulldogs get a big reception but no entrance. Big heat as per for the heels and one crowd sign alludes to Bundy's 'thigh burn'. Weirdly enough, this is a glorified squash by the heels after some initial Bulldog offense. Cool early spot see's a double dropkick take Studd down from the Bulldogs but from there, its all the heels...and its all slow and boring. Crowd are still really into it but a Studd shove to the referee gets the Bulldogs the DQ win. After the match, there's more dissention between the giant heels and I PRAY we never see a match between them! Match Rating: 1/2*

So as a summary, both shows were pretty sub par. The major focus seems to be on the upcoming house show match between Savage and Hogan which is all good on my part, if not maybe a little too soon for Savage when he has such good momentum. Steamboat and Roberts finally got some emphasis after their huge SNME angle and Roberts is really starting to look twisted, so twisted they're linking him to Satanism it seems. Shame about the very last match between the Bulldogs and the Heenan Family. It's looking like the big lads may be on course for a break up so why squash the tag teams? Perfect opportunity to have cemented the Bulldogs as THE team but low and behold, nada! Will try and finish off the rest of May in the next A.S.S but until then, have a good'n!

Hello Turnbucklers! It's our last SNME before Wrestlemania 2 (ITS COMING!) so you'd think this should put some fuel in the tank and get us really pumped! Looking at the card, we have a WWE Title match and a Tag Team Title match. King Kong Bundy is also on the card so hopefully he'll come out looking like a monster at the end of the show. The Boxing Match I don't expect much from but we shall see! I've linked the entire show below for anyone who wants to check it out! Onwards we go people...

The Show:

We start the show off with Mean Gene interrupting Mr T's workout session. Mr T rants because of said interruption but stops to claim that he will kick Bob Orton's arse in a boxing match later! He growls to send us into the opening credits! Got to say, Mr T's punches were really weak looking.

Our commentators tonight are Vince McMahon and Jesse Ventura who run the down the card as per!

We get a clip of Piper's Pit a few weeks ago where Hogan crashed the segment to sign Bob Orton's open boxing contract on behalf of Mr T to set up tonight's match.

Back to Mean Gene who is with Roddy Piper and Boxing Bob Orton. Piper brings out a picture of Mr T with Boy George and proceeds to rinse Mr T. Orton says there's no Hogan to back him up in the match. Pretty poor promo considering the ammo Piper has to use on the way to Wrestlemania.

We see clips of Mr T training before he's back with Mean Gene. He says he's ready and he likes 'to take men out.' That explains the Boy George picture at least... He says he doesn't care about Piper and neither of them are nothing but chumps! Fightin' talk.

Bob Orton vs Mr T (Boxing Match)

They're already both in the ring when we return although I was expecting to see Mr T get his own entrance. Piper tries to get a cheap shot in but it's ultimately no sold by Mr T before Orton pearl harbours Mr T to begin the match. What else can I say about this other than it was a fake boxing match with the added intrigue of Piper at ringside attempting to get into Mr T's head. Eventually it breaks down completely and Piper ends up hitting Orton before Mr T cleans house sending Orton outside for the countout. Piper comes in and it looks like he's ready to square off with T. Piper spits and T accepts. It doesn't get too far as Orton pearl harbours Mr T and the heels put the boots to him. Piper whips him with his belt as Orton holds him down. The heels celebrate before Mr T stops selling the attack and challenges them more. The match itself was a fake boxing match, so take that for what you will but the aftermath was great until Mr T stopped selling it. The visual of Piper whipping Mr T was great and it looked like there was very little holding back. I'm sure in 1986, the sight of a celebrity being whipped was HUGE for the audience. What would've been great would have been Mr T selling the attack all the way to the back, but he didn't even sell it after the heels exited the ring. Match Rating: DUD

After the match Mr T is with Mean Gene again! He says no one has ever 'whooped him' in public before like Piper just did. He wants Piper and he don't like that the heels are dirty! The crowd I'd have expected to be a little more noisy for that but they were hardly noticable.

Still with Mean Gene and he's joined by Bobby Heenan and King Kong Bundy. Bundy wants Hogan but he isn't getting him tonight apparently. Heenan has a contract with him for Hogan to sign for Bundy to get a title shot!

King Kong Bundy vs Steve Gatorwolf

Bell rings and Bundy goes straight to it sending Gatorwolf down with elbows and chops. He hits an avalanche in the corner and insists on a 5 count to get the VERY quick win! He gets on the mic after the match and screams about wanting Hogan. He's starting to look stronger once again as we head towards Wrestlemania and that's what he needs but he started us his run last year with squashes, then had normal matches for most the year...and now he's back to squashes. I'd like to think a bit more care and consistency would've made him a much more legitimate challenge to Hogan at this point. It seems to me that the only person who could be a legitimate threat to Hogan's title at this point would've been Piper once again. Match Rating: DUD

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with an agitated Don Muraco. He says Mr Fuji has the flu and that Hogan is behind it. He says Mr Fuji has found him a replacement manager for the night...and it's Bobby Heenan! Heenan says that anytime anyone gets in the ring with Hogan, he will have their back! 

Still with Mean Gene and this time he's joined by Hulk Hogan. He says when your the champion you have to expect anything and everything. The only thing on his mind in the Heenan and Fuji switch but luckily the crowd will keep their eyes on them. They'll have to break Hogan to take the title but no one has done that before!

Hulk Hogan (WWE Champ) vs Don Muraco [WWE Title Match]

It's title match time as Hogan comes out to a much more subtle pop than we're used to. He comes out to Real American as well which Vince McMahon shills as awesome. Muraco gets the early control with strikes to Hogans back as the crowd chants for Hogan. Hogan counters an irish whip and levels Muraco with a back body drop followed by the dreaded back rake. Heenan gets up on the apron but gets knocked off for his troubles. A clothesline in the corner sends Muraco to the mat before an atomic drop sends him flying outside. Hogan follows him outside and sends him into the ringpost before throwing him back in the ring. A slugfest is won by Hogan and he gets a 2 count. Hogan manages to lock on a bearhug but it's eventually broken up by a headbutt from Muraco. Muraco hits a nice leg drop and rallies Hogan with kicks and knees for a 2 count. He continues to beat on Hogan using an asian spike and more knee lifts to Hogan's face as the crowd chant Hogan again, although they're not as loud as you'd assume. Muraco hits a slow side Russian leg sweep before hitting another asian spike from the second rope for a 2 count. Hogan 'hulks up' and no sells Muraco's punches before hitting many of his own. Big boot, leg drop but Heenan breaks up the cover for the DQ win for Hogan. Hogan chokes Heenan but King Kong Bundy attacks from behind! Muraco holds Hogan in the corner as Bundy avalanches Hogan time after time after time! Hogan flops down like a wet napkin before Muraco sets him for numerous splashes by Bundy. Hogan sells it like death and the crowd are in a hushed state of despair it seems! That's more like it for Bundy! Now he's a legitimate threat AND it's more personal! Muraco got more offense in the match then Hogan's previous opponents and gained some solid heat for his role in the aftermath. All in all, now I'm starting to care about Wrestlemania's main event. Match Rating: *3/4

We see Hogan being loaded into an ambulance but hey, Mean Gene is on the scene to report and find out what hospital he's off to.

We get a pretaped interview with the tag champs, The Dream Team. They overlook the loss they suffered against the Bulldogs a few weeks back. Hammer calls the Bulldogs a circus act and says they are the best team. Beefcake pipes in over Hammer's shoulder that they're the best looking too apparently. Hammer's hair says different.

The British Bulldogs vs The Dream Team (Tag Team Champs) [Tag Team Title Match]

The Bulldogs have been pushed to the moon so far in 1986 so you've got to assume it's a given their getting the titles soon. Even the champs themselves haven't looked as good as the Bulldogs have, even losing to them on Championship Wrestling. Both teams get jobber entrances however as Valentine and Dynamite start us off. Dynamite hits an atomic drop followed by headbutts from him and then Davey. Valentine is suplexed by Davey before they double shoulder tackle Hammer. Valentine begs for mercy but cheap shots Dynamite to get control. Dynamite and Beefcake botch a sequence but Dynamite takes control not long after. In comes Davey who lifts Beefcake up by his arm repeatedly. Beefcake eats an elbow from Davey and in comes Valentine. He gets press slammed for his troubles and that gets a 2 count. Dynamite comes in who works over Valentine with stomps and knees followed by a German suplex! He hits another headbutt and gets another 2 count. No offense from the champs still has Dynamite hits a knee drop from the second rope before Davey comes in for a slugfest with Hammer. He does manage to hit a dropkick and small package Hammer but it only gets a 2. Dynamite Kid in but who eats an atomic drop by Hammer, who tags in Beefcake and the champs finally get some offense. A ruckus kicks off outside the ring with the two teams and their managers. Back in the ring, Beefcake is being double teamed by the Bulldogs (something non wrestling fans might not understand at first read) but he does manage to fight out. Hammer comes in to help with a double leg stomp and he locks in the Figure 4. Dynamite breaks it up as Ventura lambasts him for cheating. Another slugfest between Davey and Hammer ends with Hammer coming off the second rope with an elbow for a 2 count. Awesome shoulderbreaker by Hammer gets another 2. More double teaming by the champs as Beefcake tags in. He hits a snapmare before hitting a double stomp but that only gets a 2. Valentine back in, he hits an elbow...and that gets 2! Dynamite cuts Hammer off at the top rope and sends him flying with a slam. He himself goes up top and comes off with a signature missile dropkick but that only gets 2. The crowd thought that was three as Dynamite gets ANOTHER 2 of a clothesline. Suplex to Valentine but the count is broken up by Beefcake! Valentine and Dynamite collide in the ring and they both go down. Hammer is on top as they fall and he gets the 3! Wow what a match! Halfway through I was worried it was going to be a drawn out squash match for the Bulldogs but how wrong I was. The champs just couldn't kill off Dynamite Kid. My only gripe is the ending as after all the punishment Dynamite took, the collision was weak so the 3 count looked unnatural. I'd hate to say it, but that would've been the time for the managers to get involved for the messy finish to keep everyone looking strong. I'd also have liked to have seen a bit more from Beefcake on the offense because I just can't seem to think of any memorable feature of his moveset. Even so, such a good match and the crowd were loving it, especially as it ticked down. Match Rating: ***1/4

Into the...hospital...with Mean Gene who's with the front doors of a local hospital. He says he will update us with Hogan's condition soon enough. You don't need to Gene, let the intrigue continue into your next shows eh?

We get to see the entirety of Hogan's entrance/music video ... the now famous Real American. It's patriotic and it's got a catchy riff so I'm sure 1980's USA masturbated to this.

Into the pretape with Mean Gene who's with Adrian Adonis. Adonis says he woke up this morning and wanted to be Mrs Adonis. His opponent tonight is Junkyard Dog and it's back to the fire hydrant with him apparently!

Adrian Adonis vs Junkyard Dog

I guess we're straight into the next match here and it kicks off fast! JYD gets the early advantage sending Adonis flying into the ringpost and then getting him caught up in the ropes. The crowd goes crazy before Adonis is flung back into the back by JYD before he follows up with a clothesline for 2. JYD picks him up and plants him with a ... jumping neck bump thing. Adonis fights back with uppercuts and a slap. JYD counters a whip and send Adonis flying over the tunbuckle. Jimmy Hart consoles him on the outside as JYD struts around effeminately in the ring as if to ring his opponent were somewhat camp. Debatable Mr Dog? I guess not. JYD drags both Adonis and Hart back into the ring, nails a headbutt and then sends both of them flying back outside as Ventura calls him a bully. Headbutts by JYD for 2 as Hart puts Adonis' foot on the rope and then trips JYD in the corner. Adonis distracts the ref while Hart ties JYD to the bottom ropes. Adonis chokes out JYD while the ref is distracted again. The ref manhandles Adonis off of JYD allowing JYD to get free from the ropes. Adonis manages to get another 2 count before trying to hit a piledriver but it knocks out the ref. JYD sends Adonis into Jimmy Hart and JYD manages to get the 3! After the match Adonis clocks JYD with Harts megaphone before having a tantrum about losing. Match was plenty of fun and all but technically, what you'd expect. Crowd once again loved every bit so what can you do. Match Rating: *1/2

Into the ... hospital ... with Mean Gene who's with a miscellaneous doctor. The doctor tells us Hogan has sustained injuries to his back, ribs and neck. He's going to get some X-Rays which McMahon hopes are negative...and that's all for this edition! Onto the scores me thinks!

So there we have it, some decent points for a handful of Superstars. This episode of SNME was basically the one opportunity to really cement Bundy as the top monster going into Wrestlemania and sending Hogan to the hospital did just that. Dynamite Kid's performance in the tag match was steller so he scores high. In fact, it puts him into the Top 10 overall All Star Search scorers. JYD moved up 2 places also but Tito, Savage and Orndorff all didn't appear in this addition. Next edition we have an episode of Championship Wrestling AND a House Show so hopefully I'll see you then!

The Show:

So let's kick off with the January 11th edition first! Our commentary team are Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino and they start us off by running down tonights card.

Moondog Spot/John Rizzo vs Junkyard Dog/George Steele

Big pop for the faces who come out to Grab Them Cakes! Captain Lou is with them and the action starts straight away with all four men brawling. Spot and Steele have altercations on the outside while JYD and Rizzo start inside. The heels double team JYD in their corner but Steele comes in to make the save. It all happens again as the heels double team JYD right in front of the ref. Spot nails a top rope knee drop and all four men are still in the ring. Steele holds Spot who an eternity before JYD notices and nails some punches. He nails a headbutt and tags in Steele. Steele bites Spot before Rizzo randomly appears and swaps with Spot...no tag. JYD in and he locks on a chinlock before JYD escapes, nails a headbutt and gets the 3 count. After the match, Spot and Steele brawl on the outside with chairs before the faces dance in the ring. Well Steele tries to dance. Fire that referee, seriously, he may as well have not been there, lord knows JYD can count his own pin and it'll still count! Squash Rating: *

It Update time with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week he's looking at Ricky Steamboat and we see some clips of Dragon gaining some wins with his high flying moves. We ends by hyping up Dragons feud with Muraco.

Mike Sexton vs Terry Funk

Its hard to take Terry Funk as a serious threat after his amount of losses and the way he was fed to Hogan. The fans start a asshole chant and McMahon plays dumb to it all. They lock up in the ring until Funk throws Sexton outside. Hart takes a cheap shot but gets chased round the ring for his troubles. Sexton gets blindsided while distracted by Hart and eats some nasty boots to the head and some nasty chops. Back in the ring, Funk continues his offense and the crowd chant asshole again! Funk threatens to go into the crowd to teach them a lesson but gets held back. Scoop slam by Funk followed by some JYD style headbutts. Slaps by Funk before he locks in a sleeper hold and that gets the win! I hate sleeper holds being used to WIN a match. After the match Sexton gets a branding. All good stuff and good to see Funk get a win and look so mental in doing so. Squash Rating: ***

Mean Gene is in the back and he's joined by Tito Santana. He hypes up his upcoming house show match with Randy Savage. He says the belt is shining and he's ready for a good fight. He would be letting everyone down if he lost the belt to a bloke like Savage. He says he doesn't care about Liz, realises that sounds awful, says he does care about her...just not during his match. Bottom line, he's focussed and he's winning! Ariba!

We are told we can vote for the best personality in the Land of 1000 Dances video. I'd vote for...Greg Valentine, just for his ickle face!

Tito Santana (IC Champ)/Pedro Morales vs Al Navarro/Steve Lombardi

Very much the past meets the present for latino fans! Quick start with Santana and Lombardi using leapfrogs and armdrags. Scoop slam by Santana before he tags in Morales. Morales works over Lombardi's arm and nails a back body drop and a scoop slam of his own. In comes Navarro but Morales work over his arm too. The heels get some offense in with Lombardi locking on a headlock but gets backdropped. Santana gets the warm tag and nails a series of scoop slams and another back drop. He locks in the figure 4 on Navarro and gets the win. Santana looked really good in this one. Squash Rating: ***

Mean Gene is in the back and this time he's joined by Bruno Sammartino. He hypes up his upcoming match and talks about why he is the living legend. In comes Paul Orndorff screaming (and scares the living shit out of everyone) about how he has Bruno's back. He has his own cast on his arm to counter Bob Orton and we finish while Orndorff is still mouthing off to the camera!

King Kong Bundy vs Jeff Cripley/Paul Dose

Bundy is accompanied by Big John Studd and Bobby Heenan and of course they get booed while we see some typical 80's signs in the crowd. Have you ever noticed how much Bundy looks like a swollen thumb? Bundy destroys both men using his size and power before hitting the avalanche and getting the 5 count! Yes 5, because that's his gimmick! Squash Rating: ***

Piper's Pit now with Piper of course, flanked by Bob Orton. Jimmy Hart runs on excitedly and says he has a big suprise! About to step out is the 'new' Adrian Adonis and they try and hype up the crowd. Adonis appears to laughter as he's dyed his hair blonde and its covered in bows and flowers. It looks like he's also wearing make up. Adonis says he's been tough before and now he can be tough while being himself. He says that he jumped out the closet and there were no brooms behind him. He is retiring his leather jacket and he let's Piper have it. He does some shangrilah kicks so finish the segment. I can see why that could be controversial in 1986! Brave and very interesting!

Joe Williams vs Don Muraco

Not much to say again about this one. Nice suplex by Muraco but the rest is elbows, headbutts and general strikes. Muraco hits an interesting top rope move whereby he uses his weight to come down on Williams head. Muraco gets the win not long after that with a tombstone piledriver. Squash Rating: ***

Ron Shaw/AJ Petruzzi vs Ricky Steamboat/King Tonga

A blog debut for King Tonga who also goes by many other names in his career. He comes out wearing assumedly traditional Tongan threads. This name has to be his shittest right? Big reaction for Steamboat and he hams it up with the ringside fans. Tonga no sells to start before nailing a chop and doing a JYD style jig. More strikes by Tonga followed by some stalling. Steamboat tags in to a big reaction and he comes off the top onto the arm of Petruzzi. Petruzzi hits a scoop slam but eats one chop after another as Tonga comes in. He works over Petruzzi's arm before hitting a nice back suplex for 2. In comes Shaw but he fairs no better as he takes a double chop from the faces. Petruzzi back in and he eats a chop before Tonga comes in and nails a clothesline. Steamboat tags in, heads up top, hits the flying bodypress and that gets the 3. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Orton and Piper. They talk smack to Orndorff and Sammartino all to hype up their house show match. That's all see get for this episode...so onto the next...

This is the January 18th episode of Championship Wrestling. Once again our commentators are Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino. They talk about George Steele's crush on Liz and the Peace Match from a few weeks ago with Kirchner and Volkoff.

Barry O/Joe Mirto/Mr X vs King Tonga/Ricky Steamboat/Junkyard Dog

The faces (or people you've heard of) come out to Grab Them Cakes and good lord what is King Tonga wearing this time. He looks like a cheap garden feature. How many Mr X's has there been in wrestling, it can't surely be the same guy all the time. Steamboat plays the face in peril so its already not a complete squash. Steamboat and JYD collide by accident and the heels take advantage continuing their destruction of Dragon. JYD tags in, nails a headbutt and gets the 3 count. JYD brings some kids in the ring to dance afterwards. Squash Rating: **

Its this week's update with Lord Al and its focussing on George 'the Animal' Steele. We see a clip of him dealing with his confused emotions over Elizabeth from the previous Saturday Nights Main Event. 

Ted Arcidi vs Joe Williams

Before the match starts we see a clip of Arcidi breaking some bench press record and a lot of people seem to care. This guy is huge to be fair and in comparison, Williams looks like a matchstick. I seriously think Williams walked into the wrong building and no one told him until the bell rung. Not much in this except a really nice clothesline from Arcidi (very Bret Hart like). A powerslam gets the win for Arcidi who came off quite well in this one. Squash Rating: ****

Into the back with Mean Gene who's joined by Roddy Piper! He's got an upcoming steel cage match coming with Bruno Sammartino in Boston. He says that Bruno is a good name for a dog in a cage. The people in Boston would love to see Piper get ripped apart apparently! Typically good hyper Piper promo who really put over Bruno as a legend with nothing to lose. I'm annoyed I couldn't find a good source for the Boston show for that match alone!

We see the entirety of the Peace Match from Saturday Nights Main Event. If you want to know how spectacular it was, go read the last edition!

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Randy Savage. He has a big green sack apparently full of money. He says that's the kind of money that comes with belts and he's going to beat Tito Santana. Liz says Macho Man is definitely going to win. Mean Gene questions the influence of Macho over her but Macho cuts in and rants. Another classic! Loved it!

We see another clip of the Land of 1000 Dances video and again they want us to vote for the best personality within...

Jim Powers vs Adrian Adonis

Adonis as of last week is 'adorable' and the crowd appreciate that by chanting 'faggot' at him while McMahon giggles obliviously. This is a really quick squash though and Adonis wins with a DDT which Sammartino emphasises as a piledriver. Think about that, at this point a DDT was so unknown to a legend like Bruno Sammartino. Squash Rating: *

Piper's Pit now with Hercules! He demands some competition and wants some Tito Santanas and some Hulk Hogans. He yells and poses and its all boring until Freddie Blassie puts him over to save it. They all laugh at Tito before more yelling and the throwing of stools...actual stools.

Bret Hart vs Don Driggers

A Bret Hart singles match! He sells the arm for Don Driggers before gaining offense of his own. He hits a nice legdrop before throwing Driggers out the ring and hitting a scoop slam and throwing him into the guardrail. Back in the ring he hits a headbutt followed by an elbow drop. The commentators talk about Stu Hart and its cool to hear Bruno put him over. Bret hits a crisp backbreaker before going to the second rope for an elbow drop to win it. He lays in some boots afterwards and Bret looked awesome throughout. Squash Rating: ****

We get another look at the nominees for best performance on the Wrestling Album. I'm starting to swing for Nikolai Volkoff's track!

Ricky Hunter/Ron Shaw vs Corporal Kirchner/Danny Spivey

Danny Spivey is a new face for the blog and he's a big lad, looks a lot like Barry Windham. Spivey botches a dropkick before tagging in Kirchner who comes off the top rope. Apparently Kirchners hobby is skydiving and I dislike him more for that. Kirchner hits an awful looking clothesline and the campest tag to Spivey. He hits a bulldog and that gets the 3. That was really bad but Kirchner was dreadful. Squash Rating: DUD

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Bruno Sammartino! They put over the upcoming cage match with Piper before Bruno tells us he demanded the match. He botches awkwardly before telling us how much of a coward Piper is for having Orton around. Bad promo but Bruno has this earthly realism about him it seems forgivable...if that makes sense. Him and Vince run down the show to end it.


The final episode of January 1986 and its the 25th. Our commentators are once again Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino who run down the card.

Mr X/Joe Mirto vs Junkyard Dog/Paul Orndorff

Big reaction for the faces in this one and weirdly enough, big boos for Mr X. Orndorff still has a cast on his arm. Big cheers for Orndorff as he comes off the top with an elbow and between the faces they work over the arm of Mr X. Orndorff hits a dropkick at one point although it didn't look too crisp and the same with a following clothesline. He signals and then hits a good piledriver and that gets the win and the faces celebrate with a jumping high-five. Orndorff was super over in this one and JYD was thankfully kept to the minimal. Squash Rating: **

Update with Lord Al this week is about Andre the Giant. We see clips of the Heenan family destroying him a few months back, injuring Andre. Apparently Andre is now healed and is on his way back.

Terry Funk vs Sal Gee

Typical Funk squash match, very similar to the one on the 11th. Crowd are happy when jobber Gee gets some scoop slams in, sending Funk to the outside to regroup. Funk of course regains control but Gee gets some more offense in. Funk manages to lock on the sleeper hold and that gets the win. As is custom, Gee gets a branding after the match. Squash Rating: **

Into the back with Mean Gene who is with Roddy Piper. They hype up the cage match with Bruno in Boston. This week Piper puts over the cage itself and its all good. Hyper Piper returns and puts over Bob Orton being barred from the Boston event!

Paul Dose vs Don Muraco

I should point out, it flashes up Paul Rose instead of Dose...how hard is it to spell Dose? Muraco obviously dominates the whole match and gets the elimentary win with the tombstone. Standard Muraco match, nothing special, as shown by the lack of details. Squash Rating: *

We get our first very brief screenshot of the Wrestlemania 2 logo before joining Mean Gene in the back. Tito Santana is with him and they talk about someone called the Miami Dolphins. Apparently Tito is a lot like them and Tito is not going to let Macho sneak a win. Their upcoming match is their superbowl and Ariba!

Gina Carabello/Terry Gibbs vs The British Bulldogs

The Bulldogs get a massive reaction and they are clearly getting hugely over. Dynamite starts off against Terry Gibbs as the crowd barks. Quick counter wrestling and Dynamite hits a nice snap suplex. Davey comes in and hits an awesome normal suplex followed by a fishermans suplex for 2! Double headbutt by the Bulldogs before they hit a double clothesline. Davey locks in a headlock, tags in Dynamite who hits another headbutt. Davey back in who sets Gino on the top rope. He hits a superplex for a 3 count! Carabello is stretchered out off camera which is weird. I loved it and so did the crowd. The Bulldogs really made themselves look great in that one! Squash Rating: *****

Piper's Pit has the tag champs, Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake on it. They run down the Bulldogs who themselves appear and demand a title shot! Valiant denies them on behalf of the champs while Piper sets up a match next week. Valiant says he'll think it over before a shoving match starts to kick off. Nice to see the Bulldogs get set up in the title picture after the previous match.

We see the whole George Steele/Macho Man match from the previous Saturday Nights Main Event. Point being, don't forget Steele fancies Liz.

We get another brief shot of Wrestlemania 2 followed by a run down for best performance on the Wrestling Album nominees. Roddy Piper sounds wasted in his as does Lou Albano in his. Then again, I'm sure being wasted helped with those ones.

Steve Lombardi/Tiger Chung Lee/Dr Midnight vs Hillbilly Jim/Cousin Luke/Uncle Elmer

First...Dr Midnight?! Really? He looks like Mr X's even eviler cousin. The hillbillies are over with everyone but me it seems as they dance around before the match. I refuse to go into details with this one as it was dire. Hillbilly Jim gets the win with an elbow drop. We get more dancing to send everyone home happy. Squash Rating: *

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Ricky Steamboat. He cuts a cool promo more to Mr Fuji than Don Muraco and wonders what kind of master he truly is. Bruno Sammartino comes in when Steamboat goes off and he's happy Orton is barred from his upcoming match with Piper. He rants in Italian and all is cool. That's all for this week's and this months Championship Wrestling.

So not much too mention except really in terms of huge twists and turns. I wish I could get Bruno vs Piper but I can't find it anywhere! Adonis' new look is interesting to say the least and it was certainly unsettling to hear the crowds reaction although different time, different standards etc etc. So obviously next month we're looking at February!

WWE All Star Search #11 - September 23rd 1985

Hello Turnbucklers once again for edition #11! It feels since forever since I've seen a really good match on these blogs so here's hoping we see one soon! This edition there's no Hogan but looking at the card it still looks stacked...in one case quite literally. We have some debut's on this edition as always including one bigg'n! We also say some  goodbyes on this edition to some wrestlers we've met along the way so far. Before we start because we are 3 months ahead of the last edition, let me fill you in on a few changes. Firstly,  Greg Valentine lost the Intercontinental Title to Tito Santana in a cage match in July. Secondly, the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff did eventually lose the titles to Barry Windham and Mike Rotundo...who then lost the belts to Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine. Hulk Hogan is still your WWE Champion but will he keep it for long...probably not. Anyway...let's do this!

The Show:

Our commentators are THANKFULLY Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura. No more good guy/good guy announcing for us, these two can bounce off of each other.

Scott McGhee vs Les Thornton

OK, on paper not the best way to start but these two are both making their blog debuts so maybe just maybe they'll surprise. Scott McGhee was on the Starrcade 1985 card and I think got pretty bloodied. Les Thornton is a hometown lad on my part as he's a fellow Mancunian! Match itself is actually a weird one. It isn't bad by any means but it is somewhat boring to say the least. There are rest holds from start to finish in this one but the chain wrestling and strikes between the rest holds were superb. Both men have a superb uppercut and looked like they were holding nothing back in this one. McGhee eventually gets the win with an anti-climactic roll up. Match Rating: *

Adrian Adonis vs Rick McGraw

Rick McGraw gets the jobber entrance for this one before Adrian Adonis comes out with Bobby Heenan to big heat. Adonis is still in his leather, New Yorker style and is strangely carrying a brief case with him tonight. Adonis may be able to impress more than earlier in the blog when he was teaming with Dick Murdoch. Rick McGraw is solid but unspectacular. The briefcase turns out to be the $25,000 bounty on Paul Orndorff. Match is slow as Adonis works over the arm of McGraw while Monsoon calls him fat. Crowd has died early in this one and Adonis sends McGraw to the outside. On the plus side, McGraw lands on then sells the arm that Adonis was working over and Adonis keeps targeting it and working it over...great psychology! McGraw is eventually sent back to the outside where Heenan teases nailing him with the briefcase and actually does it...to no reaction. Suplex back in by Adonis and he goes up top. 80's wrestling 101 says this won't end well...and they've read the rulebook too as it fails. McGraw gets some offense in including a sloppy looking suplex but it's not long until Adonis counters, nails the DDT and gets the 3 count. Although slow, the psychology was superb in this one with the arm being targeted. It was forgotten about somewhat in the final goings which is a shame but for the most part it was all good. Adonis looked good in this one which I'm sure was the aim. Match Rating: *3/4

Into the back with Gorilla Monsoon and RANDY SAVAGE! We're just an Ultimate Warrior and Ted DiBiase away from the 80's all star deck. He says that Paul Roma is actually Hulk Hogan in his head tonight. He talks what can only be described as noise and rips off his tye-dye T-Shirt. Short promo but this bloke is unlike anyone else on that roster promo-wise so will it get him far?

Randy Savage vs Paul Roma

Paul Roma gets the jobber entrance in this one as we see Randy Savage and the stunning Elizabeth come to the ring. Unfortunately their overshadowed by Otto Wanz...who has a huge gut and gets to wave at the fans. Macho Man is wearing a lovely blue robe with white tassles which is all good. He stalls like a motherf*cker while also finding time to give a bollocking to Liz. They do start but only gets in the way of Macho Man's stalling. Once Savage gains control everything he does is crisp and cool. Roma does get some offense in including a scoop slam and a cool sunset flip from the top rope. Macho Man regains control by sending him outside and the bell randomly rings but Monsoon plays it off. Savage hits an Ax Handle from the top rope onto Roma on the floor which is a great spot in 1985 WWE. Back in the ring, a nice suplex by Savage followed by his signature Macho Man Elbow Drop...and another...and that gets the 3. Short but sweet and he mouths off on the mic to celebrate. Macho Man looked awesome from pre-match to post-match and I look forward to seeing more of him. Paul Roma looked good too in-ring and was allowed more offense than I expected. Match Rating: *1/2

Andre the Giant vs King Kong Bundy

The Colossal Jostle is what this one is being hyped up as. A couple of weeks before this show, Bundy and Big John Studd had injured Andre so he's looking for revenge. King Kong Bundy and Jimmy Hart are in the ring and have good heat on them which is good. Andre the Giant comes out with Captain Lou Albano to a huge Hogan sized pop. It feels like I havn't seen Bundy in a while and Andre has been inconsistent with his appearances. They lock up quickly and Andre chokes him in corner and should've been DQ'd already but f*ck it, who needs rule consistency. More choking until Bundy nails some weak punches but they don't last for long. This is painful viewing but the crowd love it, firmly behind Andre. To be fair, both men sell each others crap strikes but still...I hope this ends soon. Andre botches a WRISTLOCK and locks on an Armbar instead and ends up still managing to recline mid-hold. After an absolute age, Bundy fights out but eats a headbutt to send him outside. He lands on a table but it doesn't break...just wrap your head around that, a table in wrestling maintaining the weight of King Kong Bundy. Back in the ring Bundy takes control with more strikes and chokes but it seems the crowd are losing interest too, not quite gaining momentum on an Andre chant. More back and forth until Andre nails a big boot, goes for the cover but Big John Studd runs in for the DQ win for Andre. It all kicks off afterwards as Bundy and Studd try to attack Andre but Andre grabs a chair and the heels bail. That was far too long of a match but it kept Bundy looking like a good threat to Hogan. Andre at this point has no right to be anything other than a novelty appearance and not an in-ring performer. The fact Savage was on previously to this match just proves how important basic mobility is to good in-ring entertainment. Match Rating: DUD

Bob Orton vs SD Jones

Straight into the next match and this is a filler match to be realistic. Orton still sells like a bandit for Jones even though he's nothing but a jobber at this point. Orton nails a dropkick of all things but Jones works over the arm. I say works over, he literally just holds it. When he does actually attack Orton's arm, it gets sold and it all looks good. Orton stalls like a bandit but ends up back in wristlocks and armbars. Orton takes control with a straight up punch to the mush and works over SD's neck and back. Neither sell their respective weak point which just makes this match boring until Orton wakes me up with a crisp atomic drop. Orton hits a flying headscissors which was impressive but Jones takes control with headbutts and a suplex for 2. More and forth until Orton hits a second rope reverse splash for the 3 count. Match Rating: 1/2*

The British Bulldogs vs The Hart Foundation

Now we're talking! These two teams had a great match a couple of editions previously but back then they were new to the WWE landscape. Now we're 6 months down the line it'll be interesting to see how they've grown and how they'll gel. Bret and Dynamite start but Bret stalls and makes a big deal about hair pulling. They eventually lock up and the action is fast and furious straight away ending in a Dynamite slingshot and the heels regrouping on the outside. Back in they trade wristlocks until Bret is sent back outside and the heels regroup once again. Anvil comes in and nails a hard scoop slam. Davey Boy in and he gets a scoop slam of his own on Anvil. Davey Boy hits a dropkick and the heels regroup once again but more briefly this time. Bret tags back in and nails some punches but gets caught in a cool victory roll spot for a 1 count. Bret takes control and tags out to Neidhart who continues the offensive and then back in. More quick tags as they continue to work over Davey Boy including Anvil locking in a bearhug. Dynamite gets tagged in and cleans house of the heels. A Bret cheap shot derails Dynamite as the Hart Foundation start laying into him now. Anvil sends him to the outside where Bret scoop slams him on the concrete. The Harts use heely tactics and Bret takes over on Dynamite including his signature second rope elbow for 2. Anvil back in and he lays in some strikes to the back and a front facelock. Dynamite tries to get to Davey and the crowd are heating up. Unfortunately Bret breaks it all but gets chased by Davey around the ring. All the while, Dynamite is being choked out by Anvil during the distraction. Dynamite pushes to make the tag once again and makes it but oh no (!), ref didn't see it so won't allow it! Bret works over Dynamite now but gets caught in a backslide for 1! Bret traps Dynamite in the ropes, or so he thought as he charges, misses and crotches himself. Davey gets the hot tag and cleans house of the heels. Bret whipped chest first into the corner for 2 and then eats a picture perfect press slam for 2. Bret hits a perfect backbreaker and Anvil comes off the top with a ax handle to add to the backpain. The heels work over Davey and actually nail the Hart Attack! Ref is distracted though while Bret is pinning Davey so Dynamite comes off the top with a flying headbutt and Davey gets the 3 count! Harts attack after the match and leave the Bulldogs nursing bruises but soaking up cheers. Great match and the should be blueprint for most tag team matches. Bulldogs were solid but Davey looked slightly better in this one mainly due to being allowed more offense in. Bret looked good showing off some crisp offense that will come to be his signature moveset and Anvil was entertaining yet limited as always. Match Rating: ***1/2

Into the back with Jesse Ventura, Don Muraco and Mr Fuji who kiss each others arse and tell Ricky Steamboat to watch out later!

Still in the back with Gorilla Monsoon, Jimmy Hart and Terry Funk. They're looking for revenge on Junkyard Dog for trying to drown Jimmy Hart. Funk says Tito and Hogan are more important than JYD.

The Missing Link vs Lanny Poffo

Ah, The Missing Link, we hardly had time to get to know each other. This is his last appearance on the blog and also Lanny Poffo's first. The brother of Randy Savage and I want to know if talent runs in the family. Bobby Heenan introduces himself as the Manager of the Year to some subtle heat. Poffo throws a selection of scrolls into the crowd. Poffo uses his quickness to dodge Link but Link is moving so slow that he may as well not be there. A lot of stalling in the early goings but slowly and surely they get into it. Link should be coming off as strong in this one but he's so clunky that it just doesn't help. He grabs a chair but doesn't need nor use it and continues to show off his hard head gimmick that all foreigners or freaks seem to have. Poffo doesn't get any offense in on the grand scheme of things and Link gets the win after interference from Heenan and a headbutt from Link off the second rope. Thank lord that was Link's last appearance, two dreadful appearances was all I needed. Match Rating: DUD 

Ricky Steamboat vs Don Muraco

On paper this one could go either way. Muraco had a push earlier in the year and Steamboat has been consistently impressing for a while. We start off quickly with Muraco going for the Pearl Harbour attempt but it doesn't get him far as Steamboat unloads with chops and strikes. He chokes Muraco with his belt right in front of the ref and nails a chop from the top rope sending Muraco down and then to the outside. Steamboat looks like he's wearing pajamas in this one. Back in the ring and Steamboat stays in control until he's tripped by Mr Fuji on the outside. Once Muraco is in control he's runs through the heel handbook including an extra long nerve hold. Steamboat escapes briefly but nails slingshotted out of the corner and finds himself back in the nervehold. Muraco goes for a tombstone piledriver but Steamboat counters. He then counters another slingshot attempt. He goes on the offensive and goes for a splash but eats nothing but knees. Muraco gets a 2 count before Mr Fuji tries to get involved. He ends up meeting heads with Muraco allowing Steamboat to go up top. Mr Fuji cuts him off though with salt to the eyes and Steamboat wins by DQ. Match was OK and the finish hurt neither guy I guess. I would've liked to have seen Steamboat get the clean win but at least he looked like a top babyface in this one. Match Rating: *3/4

Corporal Kirchner vs Moondog Spot

Now THIS is the match I was looking forward to the most when I looked at this card. This is Kirchner's debut on the blog and he's what I can only see as a replacement to Sgt Slaughter. His reactions are not nearly as big and he seems like a diet version. On top of that, how tough are corporals in comparison to other ranked army officials. The match is as you would expect but what really stands out to me are Kirchners little tantrums to hype him up. Kirchner eventually gets the win with a samoan drop. I'm not a fan of patriotic American characters repeatedly shoved down my throat since its the WORLD Wrestling Federation...but hey, why complain, not like it's going to change in the next 30 years. Match Rating: 1/4*

The Junkyard Dog vs Terry Funk

Terry Funk is out first with Jimmy Hart to very little reaction. Junkyard Dog comes out to Grab Them Cakes and Funk wastes no time in starting things off, meeting JYD on the outside with punches. Funk gets backdropped on the concrete and struggles to get back in the ring thanks to JYD. JYD heads outside to slam Funk on the concrete and that's two hard blows to the back in the early goings. Funk Flair flops over the corner to the outside and still can't get any offense in. JYD poses to the crowd and he gets a small reaction. JYD suplexes Funk into the ring but gets low blowed and Funk takes control. Elbows and headbutts by Funk but JYD no sells and nails some headbutts of his own. Funk tries to cheat but the ref catches him. As Funk argues with the ref, JYD rolls him up for the 3 count! Afterwards Jimmy Hart distracts JYD long enough for Funk to attack. Funk brands JYD to prove his point. Match was quick and not too bad. It was all about the ending as Funk looked like the maniac he is but also made JYD look great just by selling like a bandit to his basic moveset. Match Rating: *1/4

There we have it for this edition. The show started off OK but hit it's peak (by quite a distance) with the tag team match. No big changes to the overall scores even though though top scorers didn't appear on the show. We have a couple of decent scorers this edition and Ricky Steamboat would've been higher if the crowd weren't as dead as they were. Anyway...onto the next show which is Saturday Nights Main Event 2 and then 2 more 1985 shows left to go! See you next time!

WWE All Star Search #7 - Wrestlemania 1

Hello Turnbucklers! So we've made it here after trawling through 1984, Wrestlemania 1. Shown on CCTV it was a huge risk for WWE but I think it's safe to say it paid off. This is a big card with a big main event so it'll be intriguing to see how the rest of the card matches up. Before we get there, let's do a summary of what I've learnt so far. The most over superstar is by far Hulk Hogan. His pops are so much bigger than everyone elses its surreal. Tito Santana, Andre the Giant and Sgt Slaughter have been also getting strong crowd reactions. On the heel side, number 1 has to Roddy Piper. The heat he's gained in a year its amazing! Greg Valentine is another who has impressed me so far, always bringing out consistently decent matches. Most suprising superstar for me so far has been The Iron Sheik, I actually look forward to his matches now. Iron Mike Sharpe is most underrated so far in my opinion. As a jobber he stands out from the crowd. Worst wrestlers so far? My least favourite at least are the Wild Samoans, whether they're the worst is a personal opinion though. Too many headbutts and no sells for my liking. Quick shoutout to Terry Daniels too...and his armbar. Anyway...let's do this!

The Show:

Here we go then! We kick off with some funky music while screenshots of the match-ups and celebrities flashing by. Our commentary team is Gorilla Monsoon AND JESSE VENTURA! I've been waiting for this team, my second all time favourite pairing on commentary. Fink welcomes us to Wrestlemania and he gets a big pop. I guess the crowd knew this was a special event from the beginning. Mean Gene Okerlund butchers the American National Anthem for us but gets a BIG reaction. To be fair, he really had fun being the one to sing it.

Into the back with Lord Alfred Hayes who's wearing a lovely cream number. He seems strangely nervous in front of the camera and hypes up 'WrestlingMania'.

Mean Gene is with Tito Santana who says no one is going to stop him...and that means you Executioner! Ariba! As soon as Tito buggers off, Executioner appears to tell Tito he's going for his leg...and nothing else. Talk about giving the game plan away.

Tito Santana vs The Executioner

Executioner in the ring first and he's announced as being unknown...in anything. Big pop for Tito as he comes out. Can't understand why Tito is opening Wrestlemania against the Executioner. Had he had a more formidable or at least established opponent, Tito would've been a perfect opening attraction but not with the Executioner. I should point out that Executioner is Buddy Rose under a mask. The crowd is hot in the beginning as Tito holds Cutioner at bay with dropkicks. Tito maintains control throughout the match although Cutioner does gets some basic offense in. Cutioner does what he promised and aims for the legs but Tito fights back. Executioner looks a little off balance while on the offense. Cutioner goes up top but Santana counters into a slam. He goes for a splash but eats nothing but raised legs. Cutioner works on the legs again but Tito sends Cutioner onto the outside. Flying Jalepeno for Santana, Figure Four and that's all she wrote for Cutioner as Santana wins! Better than I thought it would be and that's including the fact it didn't last long. Crowd loved Tito and Executioner was the standard big man opponent needed to emphasize Santana's normal routine. Match Rating: *1/2

Into the back with a nervous Lord Al who sends us to Mean Gene and SD Jones. Jones has the best voice/accent I've heard yet. He says he's ready. He leaves and King Kong Bundy and Jimmy Hart come in and tell SD Jones to expect to eat a 5 count tonight.

King Kong Bundy vs SD Jones

Big boo's for Bundy which is good considering he's not done much in his run so far apart from squash jobbers. Match goes as follows...Strikes by Bundy, bearhug into the corner, splash in the corner, Jones goes down, eats another splash on the mat...5 count. Bundy wins. As far as squash matches go, this one is relevant and has use to it. Bundy looked like a monster in front of his biggest audience yet. A good way to set the tone over the next year. What the main problem here is the match is announced as a new match length record at 9 seconds...although anyone with a concept of time will understand how wrong that time is. Pointless lie that made WWE look silly for trying. Match Rating: DUD

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Matt Borne...son of Tough Tony Borne. He puts over Steamboat but says he's too nice of a guy and that's why Borne will win. He leaves and Steamboat appears. He hypes Wrestlemania and says he's here to develop the 'meanness' he's lacking. Arib....wait, no, wrong babyface.

Ricky Steamboat vs Matt Borne

Not the biggest reaction for Steamboat but I think the crowd have settled slightly. It starts off at a quick pace with Steamboat getting some leapfrogs in before nailing Borne with a chop to the throat. Borne goes for a couple of side suplexes but Steamboat escapes both and nails a delayed atomic drop and shows a little personality in doing so. Reverse atomic drop by Borne puts him in control. It doesn't last long as Steamboat replies with chops and a headlock. Borne with a nice belly to belly suplex followed by a standard suplex. Steamboat fights back, nails another suplex, hits a nice neckbreaker and Steamboat is firmly in control. Steamboat goes up top, nails a flying cross body and gets the 3 count! One of the better, quick matches I've seen in this blog so far. Steamboat looked good here but was no where near the superstar we look back fondly at. Steamboats style and popularity really leave very little for Jimmy Snuka to come back to as at this point, there were so many similarities between the two. Match Rating: **

Into the back with Lord Al, who runs down the next match. We even see Beefcake heading to the ring in the background.

Mean Gene is in the back with the Sammartino's who give us some fighting talk. They leave and are instantly replaced by Beefcake and Valiant. Valiant does all the talking but he sounds like he's trying to fit a years worth of talking into one promo. Beefcake then gets stage fright and has to be bailed out by Valiant. That was incredibly awkward but surely Beefcake would be prepared!

David Sammartino vs Brutus Beefcake

Out of all the matches on the card, this one was the one I was least looking forward too. David Sammartino is the definition of a superstar lacking X Factor and Beefcake at this point was as dull as the Bury Times. David is with dad, Bruno who gets a great reaction from the crowd and Beefer is with Johnny Valiant who is quite similar to Freddie Blassie. The heels stall forever until we get a lock up, but nothing happens. We get a Beefcake strut but its all for nothing as Sammartino controls with his basic offence. We get long headlocks by both and this is getting painfully boring. Eventually, Valiant gets involved on the outside, which draws in daddy Bruno and the whole thing is thrown for a double-DQ. No one looked good in this although Bruno got big cheers. It should have been a tag match between the four men out there. Match Rating: 3/4*

The Junkyard Dog vs Greg Valentine (IC Champ) [IC Title Match]

JYD gets himself a title shot already on the WWE's biggest show to date. It seems a bit strange considering Santana was in the opener after feuding with Hammer for the past year. Steamboat would've been a better choice in this one and JYD could've fought Borne. Hammer of course is out with Jimmy Hart. JYD controls to start and Hammer tries to get a breather. He does get the briefest of offense in before JYD hits his canine-headbutts and Hammer bails outside. Hammer uses heely tactics when he gets back in to take control and works over the leg of JYD. He goes for a figure four but it gets countered. JYD nails some more headbutts and Valentine timbers to the mat. Jimmy Hart tries to get involved but heel miscommunication leads to a nasty fall to the outside by Hart. Seriously, I think it gave him a bad concussion. A bit of back and forth before Hammer goes for the rollup. It looks like he's won but Tito Santana comes down and convinces the referee that he cheated...so we continue! Bwah?! Hammer says fuck that and loses via countout. What a ridiculous finish to a pretty poor match. Both men's popularity saved this one from being really bad. Match Rating: *1/4

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with Blassie, Sheik and Volkoff. They ramble incoherently until the US Express and Albano replace them. They say that they're heading to the ring.....which they're clearly not.

The Iron Sheik/Nikolai Volkoff vs The US Express (Tag Team Champs) [Tag Team Title Match]

NOW they're heading to the ring. Big boo's for the foreigners and massive cheers for the US Express. Big shock there. Volkoff does his pre-match singing and then we get under way. The US Express are Mike Rotundo and Barry Windham who won the titles a few months earlier from Murdoch and Adonis. Rotundo and Sheik start us off with Rotundo getting the advantage with hiptosses and slams. Windham gets a shot in before he gets the tag and follows up with a shot from the top rope. The heels try and gain control but heel miscommunication on their part means Volkoff eats a Sheik dropkick. Sheik apologizes and Volkoff comes in...but finds himself in a headlock. A couple of one counts and eventually the heels take control. Sheik nails an elbow for 2 and follows up with a lovely side suplex. He tries for a standard suplex but Rotundo counters into one of his own. Volkoff in but quickly finds himself in a hammerlock before eating a sunset flip. Volkoff regains control, Sheik back in who locks on an abdominal stretch. He eventually escapes and makes the hot tag to Windham. Rotundo takes Sheik to the floor but doesn't keep an eye on him. Windham and Volkoff brawl until Sheik nails Windham in the noodle with Blassies cane behind the ref's back and that gets the win and we have new tag champs! A bit of a suprise considering the US Express were over huge and the foreigners were no where near in comparison. I can't see this title reign being a long one but lets see. Match was actually a good'n I think. Rotundo was a good face in peril and the foreigners had enough heat on them to really make it work. Match Rating: **1/4

Into the back with Mean Gene who's with the new Tag Champs. They say they proved themselves and that Russian and Arab countries are the best. That escalated quickly.

Still in the back and Mean Gene is joined with Heenan and Studd. Heenan is great here as he tells Gene to keep his hands to himself and tells Andre to look forward to retirement.

Andre the Giant vs Big John Studd (Bodyslam Challenge)

This is Studd's $15,000 vs Andre's career...which hardly seems balanced. In fact, Andre comes out with a massive Donny Osmond smile on his face so I don't really feel like he's about to become unemployed. Studd of course is with Bobby 'the Brain' Heenan. Studd tries to get the early advantage but it doesn't quite work and he finds himself reeling on the outside. Back in and Andre does his chokes in the corner...which is a high spot for him...and then uses his arse to his advantage. Studd fights back, tries to slam Andre but it fails. Andre with a bearhug, which I thought was a heel's hold. Studd bites his way out of it but soon finds himself in a headlock. Studd goes for a boot, countered...and he eats a slam shortly after. Andre wins! He gets his bag of money to throw to the crowd but Heenan knicks it back. Glorified squash match I'm afraid but Studd was never going to win this. What's worse is the fact neither man could move very well. Match Rating: DUD

Into the back where Mean Gene is with Andre who cuts a barely understandable promo about his win. I wish I could tell you what he said but he sounded like a bath being unplugged.

Still in the back with Lauper and Richter who tells Shmoolah and Lani Kai to watch out! Richter yells that she's ready and sounds like an utter hick in the process. They are replaced by Moolah and Kai, where by Moolah shows off her new glasses and Kai says...watch out!

Wendi Richter vs Leilani Kai (Womens Champ) [Womens Title Match]

At the War to Settle the Score, Moolah cost Richter the title to Leilani Kai. Cyndi Lauper is still with Richter and Moolah is with Kai. I'm not going to dwell too much on this one because it was utterly a stinker. Lots of slow back and forth with hair pulling added here and there. Kai tries for a gutwrench suplex but the women botch it and have to salvage it into a pinning attempt. Moolah tries to get involved but Lauper stops her to a big pop. More back and forth until Kai goes for a crossbody off the top but a horrific looking roll through gets the win and the title for Richter. Let the cringeworthy celebratory dancing begin! At this point, all the hype the women's division had developed was starting to disappear now. Unfortunately the female wrestlers involved couldn't hold up their end of the deal so to speak. Not much more Lauper can do for them. Match Rating: DUD

In the back, Mean Gene is with the new champ and Lauper. They're both very happy and Richter still yells and sounds like an utter hick.

Hulk Hogan/Mr T vs Roddy Piper/Paul Orndorff

It's main event time! So here we have...Billy Martin (who has no relevance outside the USA) as ring announcer, Pat Patterson as the ref (just for a paycheck I presume), Liberace as ringbell dude (with added effeminate bell) and of course, Muhammed Ali as special enforcer. Ali gets a huge pop and every other celebrity is quickly forgotten. Piper and Orndorff's entrance is epic as they come out with the bagpipe band. Cowboy Bob Orton plus his cast are with them. We get the now well-known visual of Mr T and Hogan ready to head to the ring...and here they come! Massive pop and my version has Eye of the Tiger to make it just that little bit better! Jimmy Snuka is with the faces in this one. Everyone, plus myself, is hyped up for this. Orndorff and Hogan start...or so it looks but Piper begs to start with Hogan...and then Mr T wants to start with Piper. They lock up and trade strikes with Piper getting a brief advantage before T nails him with a firemans's carry! This draws all 6 men in the ring for a big shmoz until Ali comes in and sends Piper outside. The heels then try to walk out but the faces don't let them. The heels charge the ring but eat a double noggin-knocker, some Hogan offence and then a second double noggin-knocker. Hogan nails an atomic drop on Piper and tags in T. T hits a cool double clothesline and slams Piper to the mat followed by a hiptoss on Orndorff. Nice and the crowd love it! Hogan back in for sends Piper to the outside but gets beaten on Orndorff which sends Hogan outside also. Piper with a chairshot to the back on Hogan but no DQ. The heels can finally take control of the match as they work over Hogan. Orndorff comes in and nails a lovely suplex on Hogan. After more heel tags in and out, Orndorff hits a lovely backbreaker on Hogan but misses an elbow drop which allows T to come back in to huge noise! He wails away on Orndorff but not for long thanks to Piper. Its not long before Hogan makes his way back in for a third double noggin-knocker! Orndorff manages to get in a lovely side suplex while Piper manages to distract the ref. This also means Orton can involve himself but Snuka tries to stop him. In the resulting shmoz between everyone, Orton manages to nails Orndorff with his cats accidentally and that gives Hogan and Mr T the win! Piper and Orton berate Orndorff afterwards which plants seeds for a faceturn. They leave Orndorff behind when they leave as the faces all eat up the crowd noise. WWE's first really massive main event and it was a success! Good action, great noise and an OK finish. It was strange that Hogan was the face in peril in this one though and you'd think the celebrity would be the one to look weaker and struggle to overcome the heels. Match Rating: ***

So a card with 3 DUDS on it is never a great one is it. My advice, just watch the main event for quality seeking viewers.
